How to select a clothesline outdoors or indoors
The benefits of drying clothes outside are many, but what type of clothesline is best? Choosing a clothesline is usually a matter of space and personal preference. Here is a list of some of the most popular models in the market.

Guidelines for installing an outdoor clothesline

Whichever style of clothes rack you choose, follow these guidelines to install your outdoor clothesline:

  •     While most clotheslines are approximately seven to eight feet above ground level, install the line at a height that is comfortable for you. Extend your arms over your head and use that height as a guide. I am short so my line should be lower and some large items tend to drag the floor. I simply compensate by folding large pieces on the line.
  •     If you have a long length of clothesline ... MORE (more than 25 to 30 feet) between two t-frame supports, add a central support for better results to avoid sagging.
  •     To prevent clothing from fading due to excessive sun exposure, place your clothesline in a breezy shaded area. On the contrary, if you want to use the sun to whiten your white clothes, operate your north / south line to get the best exposure to sunlight. Hang the whitest white pieces on the outer lines if you have four or more lines. The colorful clothes can be hung from the inside lines.

But what happens if you do not have access to an outdoor area or if your neighborhood has prohibited the use of clotheslines? Opt for an interior drying rack that can be placed outdoors for short periods.

Line for outdoor drying lines

When buying a clothesline system, think about the type of line that will be used. Look for a line that is resistant, will not rust and will not stretch or warp. You will find wire, plastic or wire covered with vinyl, cotton and nylon. The most durable and the study is plastic or vinyl coated cable.

Clothesline with folding frame

Folding frame clotheslines attached to a resistant wall or fence. They can be opened when they are in use and then folded to save space.

This is particularly good for small yards and for a small family. Available in different sizes, there are models for interiors and exteriors.

Retractable clothes airer for interiors and exteriors

Retractable clotheslines are perfect for saving space in a small yard. I had one when my children were small so I could pull back while playing. This clothesline can be mounted between two fences, two poles or two trees. You can find simple lines of different sizes and weights and even a five-line model.

These are also excellent indoors for laundry rooms. The line comes in a small box or reel that is attached to a wall. When necessary, simply remove the line and place it on a hook in a ... PLUS on the opposite wall.

This discreet system is much easier to store than folding frames for interiors and occupies almost no space. These are excellent for drying clothes inside and for holding clothes hanging until they are stored.

Before selecting a retractable line, think about how you plan to use it. Simple lines will not withstand heavy towels or sheets. If you plan to use it often, select a heavier gauge line or multiple roping line for better support of wet items.

T-Pole or Pole to Pole Clothesline

The T-post clothesline is a classic. The posts are usually made of metal and are placed at a distance with two or three wires or cable lines that are in the middle. Posts must be secured in the ground with concrete for stability and are not easily removable.

This type of clothesline is durable, resistant and ideal for large items. The disadvantages are that they take up a lot of space in the yard and the lines can get dirty when not in use. (Just use a damp cloth to clean the lines before hanging it ... PLUS clothes.)

Clothes rack for umbrellas

Drying racks or dryers for umbrellas offer the advantage of using less space. They can be portable or inserted in a base that has been cemented in the ground. The umbrella rack can be removed, folded and stored when not in use. This is a space saving if you have a small patio.

The disadvantages are that the umbrella racks are smaller and the hanging space makes larger items, such as blankets or sheets, difficult to hang. They will not support as much weight as a clothesline from pole to pole.
