12 Ways to use paper towels

We use the kitchen paper all the time, we all do, but surely you've never noticed the versatility they can have. From helping us to remove the fat from our soup to serve us as a coffee filter. Want to know more? Take a look at these helpful tips and don't forget to have paper towels handy.

1. Thaw Bread

This tip is very easy, you just have to put a loaf of bread unfrozen in a bag, inside a paper towel. When you want to eat it, remove it again and let it thaw. The paper towel will absorb all the moisture that is produced.
2. Degrease The Sewing machine
Use this trick to continue what you were working without any delay. Take a paper towel and thread your sewing machine with it. Sew a series of lines to remove any residual grease from lubrication.
3. Check if you can use old seeds
If you wonder if you can plant that old bundle of seeds you just saw, here we tell you how: it cushions two paper towels and places a few seeds in them. Cover the seeds with two moistened paper towels. Keep the paper towels moist for the next two weeks, and if most seeds sprout, you can plant the rest of the package.

4. Clean can opener
The dirt that accumulates over time on the cutting wheels of your can opener should definitely not touch your food. Open the handles of your can opener, place a paper towel between your wheels, close again and turn the crank so that all the dirt is peeled off on the paper towel.
5. Emergency Coffee Filter
Have you ever had the need for a quick caffeine dose and don't have any coffee filters on hand? Take a paper towel, put in a cone shaped coffee filter and double the required terms. Then, cut the part of the paper towel that extends over the edge of the filter to make sure the filter cartridge closes properly and filters the coffee.
6. Dehydrate Brown sugar
Natural brown sugar has a high moisture content, which means it will start to stick if it doesn't run out quickly, becoming lumps that are difficult to use. Put the brown sugar in a bowl and cover with a damp paper towel. Let it rest all night and use again in the morning.
7. Keep the cast iron pots in good condition
Cast iron pans are expensive and require a little maintenance. After use, clean the skillet down with paper towels to remove oil and food. When washing, make sure to dry it on the stove and rub it with a paper towel moistened with grease to keep it in good condition.
8. Remove Wax Stains
Do not worry if you have spilled wax on a beautiful piece of furniture or if your grandson made some scribbles on the walls you had just finished painting, a paper towel will fix it. Place one over the wax stain and pass a sheet of clothing, low level, above it. The wax will be absorbed and the stain disappears.
9. Do some Compostajes
The carbon contained in paper towels makes them great allies when it comes to adding them to your manure management system. Once you have finished using them, turn your paper towels into composting material to add air to your compost. This will encourage microorganisms to grow, so it is healthy and beautiful.
10. Fat-free Bacon
Place two paper towels on the bottom of your microwave oven, put in the bacon slices you want to eat and cover with two other paper towels. Set the microwave power to high and cook the bacon for one minute at a time. It will be nice and fresh after 4 minutes.

How do paper towels work?

Paper towels are a good popular paper used mainly for cleaning, but also as a substitute for napkins, handkerchiefs, toilet paper and plastic wrap. They are available in many brands, sizes, colors and patterns, textures and strength-and even different compositions, such as standard or recycled paper products. Strength paper towel is a popular deciding factor in consumer purchases, as a strong paper towel makes the tasks easier and more effective.

History

Disposable paper towels were invented in the 1900, and marketed for the first time in 1931 by Arthur Scott, head of the Scott Paper Company. When he received a train loaded with tissue from ruined toilet paper-useless to him as it had been removed too thick-he would reuse the goods by punching into chunks and marketing larger than normal and sell them as disposable towels. They were created and marketed for kitchens in rectangles of 13 by 18 inches and gradually grew in popularity as an alternative to disposable cloth towels.
Composition

Paper towels, like many paper products, are made of wood pulp fibers. Paper towels are derived from soft woods, such as pine and fir, which is resistant but not too hard. Resin is also added to the wood to increase the strength of the fibers. This combination of wood construction, and the addition of resin, contributes greatly to the final resistance of finished paper product.
Construction

Soft woods are used to create paper towels are chipped, then cook until it is soft and clean from its natural gumminess. The resin is added, and the mixture of resin and wood is pressed through the paper machine; The water is squeezed and the wood fibers come together. This crimping stage is crucial for the strength of finished paper towels as it allows the fibers to re-bond. For double-layer paper towels, a thin adhesive has two layers of paper together. Many brands also record their paper towels with patterns that create air bags that attract water. These bags also contribute to the strength of towels ' as they help paper towels attract moisture effectively without ripping.
Importance

Strength is important utility paper towels. Many of the tasks that use paper towels are wet and dirty. Few things are so frustrating for cleaners that paper towels that are undone when they get wet, instead of keeping moisture and foot to clean and scrub. While some buyers sacrifice strength for price, stronger paper towels can be a better value for money; Some paper towels are so strong that they are almost comparable to cloth towels, and can be used in a similar way for an extended amount of time, reducing the number of towels needed.

Instructions for changing paper towels

Paper towels are common household products that are usually made of wood pulp from trees like pine and fir. Paper towels are used for cleaning spills, cleaning smooth surfaces and drying hands. When you use the last sheet, it's time to replace the paper towel roll. The method in which the roller is replaced depends on your paper towel dispenser.
Instructions

1 Remove the plug or tube on which the roll of paper towels rests. For paper towel holders that are mounted horizontally, pull the pin on one end to remove it. If the paper towel holder is vertical, you can skip this step.

2 Remove the paper towel tube from the shank.

3 Remove the packaging from the new roll of paper towels.

4 Slide The new roll over the shank. If the dealer is positioned horizontally, you have to keep the roll between the two sides of the bracket while threading the pin through the holder and the new towel roll. If the dispenser is vertical, simply place the hole of the new roll over the shank in an upright position.

What are the cellulose fibers on paper towels?

If you have ever spilled water or any other type of liquid all over the surface and wondered how paper towels absorb the mess so quickly, the answer is cellulose fibers. These cellulose fibers are found on all paper towels, and are responsible for helping to absorb water more effectively than other types of paper, such as napkins or paper plates.

About the Cellulose fibers in paper towels are actually sugar molecules. These small molecules connect to much larger cellulose molecules. Although they are made of sugar, humans do not have the ability to digest, but a cow or goat can. Cellulose has a similar effect to fiber in humans, to help food to move through the digestive system.

Composition

Most paper towels are made of trees, and cellulose is the carbohydrate that most plants make up. Cellulose is made up of polymers, which are large molecules. The attraction between monomers, the individual sugar molecules in the polymer chain, and the water molecules are what creates the absorption in paper towels.
How it works

Capillary action is the term used to describe the water absorption process in a paper towel. This is comparable to the way a plant absorbs water. Instead of being attracted to each other, the cellulose molecules are attracted by water, so that the empty spaces between the cellulose fibers are filled.
Most absorbent paper towels

No matter what brand of paper towels you buy, there is no way to guarantee that each roll will contain the same level of absorption capacity. This is because the natural fibers are composed of not being strong enough to connect the same way each time. Therefore, even if paper towels are made from the same manufacturer, their absorption capacity level may vary.

How to keep paper towels

Preserving paper towels is not just a way to help the planet, but also to save on expenses. Whether for cooking or cleaning, other household items may be replaced with paper towels. Although it cleans a child's face is an intelligent application of a sterile paper towel, a cleaning that requires a lot of disposable towels is a waste. Start by scoring the ways you currently use paper towels and the number of rolls you use per month. After applying some conservation methods, re-evaluate and see the amount of product and the money you have saved.

Instructions

1 Use less paper towels to absorb fat during meat cooking. First, pour any excess fat out of the frying pan into a jar. The oil can be strained and stored in the refrigerator for reuse or disposal. Never pour oil through the sink drain. With less oil to clean out of the skillet, you should need less a paper towel to absorb the remaining fat.

2 drain bacon after frying on a pile of paper towels. Instead of using several paper towels for this purpose, he left a pile of old newspapers with a paper towel on top. This will keep the bacon clean and the newspapers carry most of the fat drain.

3 microwave dish cover with a hard plastic cover microwave plate instead of paper towels.

4 Clean the worktops with a sponge designated for this purpose. If you are worried about germs, the sponge in the microwave in "high" for two minutes, whenever necessary-this will kill the dangerous bacteria.

5 Dry your hands with a kitchen cloth hanging in a closet or towel rack nearby. Replace with a clean towel every few days and it will reduce the cost of paper towels used for the same purpose.

6 Avoid the cleaning of windows and mirrors with paper towels, which often leave streaks and fibers in the glass. Instead, try using a soft cloth, thick fabric or crumpled newspaper on a ball with a mixture of water and white vinegar as a cleaning solution. Wear gloves If the newspaper is used as the ink may stain the hands-but not the mirror or glass.

7 Clean A large, disorderly spill from the floor with a mop towel or dish instead of a large wad of paper towels. Of course, you should be prepared to wash these items immediately after use before storing them. It is handy to clean a little mess on the floor with paper towels as the floor is a very dirty place and the paper is thrown away immediately. Never use a sponge on a floor without rinsing immediately off and heating it in the microwave to kill germs.
Tips and warnings

  •     Look for rolls of paper towels that were perforated in half a sheet.
  •     Always use the least amount of paper that will do the job.

What causes paper towels to absorb?

There is a force of attraction between water and paper fibers in paper towels which translates into absorption. This force is called capillary action. The water is written in the spaces between the fibers in the paper towels. As it is absorbed, the paper is soaked. Capillary action is the same energy by which plants extract water through the roots and also the method used when the sap of the trees is elevated. Paper towels absorb water by two methods: plant cellulose fibers absorb water and the microscopic areas between the fibers in paper towels are compared to a sponge and these spaces also absorb water.
Paper

Paper towels are created in the same way as you do all the paper. The plant material and the wood are ground until they become the fibers of microscopic plants, which consist of cellulose, which is what gives the wood its potency. Forty to 50 percent of wood is cellulose. The vegetal fibers are white bleached and pressed in thin sheets and ironed. This makes the paper.

The process

Paper towels are made of cellulose, which makes them capable of absorbing water. In addition, the spaces between the fibers in the paper towel are compared to a sponge and these spaces also absorb water. Cellulose is fiber and a carbohydrate and consists of polymers, which are giant molecules. The molecules of sugar or glucose in the polymer chain are monomers.
Attraction

The (glucose) water and sugar molecules are attracted to each other and that's how paper towels manage to absorb water. Cellulose fibers have linked-up hydrogen and oxygen atoms at the outer edges of their sugar molecules, and the water being absorbed by paper wipes has two hydrogen atoms, one of which is attached to one of the oxygen atoms. The positive end of the water molecule is extracted from the negative part of the sugar molecule and the negative end of the water molecule is extracted from the positive part of the sugar molecule. When the water seeps into the paper towel and is absorbed, the molecules are hooked to the molecules in the cellulose fibers.
Final Movement Capillaries

When the paper towel is soaked this means the force of the upward traction is the same as the weight of the water, which is the force of gravity. The capillary movement then stops.

Instructions

1 stand in the area where you are going to use paper towels. Get to several places where paper towels could be hung. Do this with other objects, such as small appliances, cans and decorative items in place. Ask the younger or shorter members of the House to be in the same area and see if they would be able to get to the paper towels at their new location.

2 Place the paper towel holder (with a full roll of paper towels on it) in the selected location. Hold it there to see if there is enough space for the towel roll to move freely. If so, make a small mark with a pencil on the wall along the top edge of the paper towel holder. If it is a horizontal bracket, make two marks along the top edge using a level.

3 Insert the screws into the wall cabinet or into the kitchen with a hand screwdriver or power. The screws must correspond with openings on the back of the paper towel holder. Hang the paper towel dispenser.

4 Place a roll of paper towels on the dispenser with the towels to be rolled forward or backward.
Tips and warnings

  •     If you are installing a paper towel dispenser on the side of the door or inside a cabinet, make sure that the screws are not so long that they penetrate all the way to the other side.

What are the differences between paper towels?

There are many different types of paper towels, but this is not to say that all paper towels are the same. The thickness or layers of the paper towel may vary, as are the strength and absorptive capacity of the different towels. You can do your own tests to determine what differences offer the best paper towel performance.
Force

The strength of the paper towel refers to the amount of weight a wet towel can withstand before the tears. You can determine the strength of different paper towels by dipping the towel, holding two ends of the paper towel and then adding weight. The towel that can contain the heaviest weight is the strongest. The strength of the paper towel may vary depending on how wet it is. Test towels by using a few drops of water, an average amount of water and then a paper towel that has been soaked.

Absorbency

Absorbent paper towels have two different factors: the amount of water that can be absorbed and how quickly the liquid is absorbed. A paper towel that you can quickly learn the liquid and collect a large amount of liquid is the most absorbent. When testing the different paper towels make sure to use a fixed size, as not all paper towels are the same size. You will have to cut all the paper towels for one size.
Layer

The layer of paper towels depends on how many layers of paper are used. There is a single layer of paper towels with a layer. Double layered paper towels are made of two layers of paper. The layers are joined using a embossing technique. Triple layer with three layers of paper. In general, the more layers in the absorbent paper towel and the stronger the paper towel. The embossing technique that unites the layers also allows the water to absorb and eject between the layers, accelerating the absorption capacity of the towel.
Recycled vs. Virgin

Some paper towels are made of recycled materials, while others are considered virgin paper. This could affect the ability to absorb water-as the paper recycles the cellulose fibers become more and shorter. Finally the fibers will become too short and can not be used in paper towels. Test the strength and absorptive capacity of paper towels to determine whether recycled paper has a similar absorption capacity and strength as Virgin paper towels.

The use of paper towels in households

Paper towels were first invented in 1907, when Arthur Scott, a toilet paper manufacturer, had a paper truck load that was too thick to be used as toilet paper. Scott perforated The thick paper in sheets and is sold as disposable paper towels. Since its invention by Scott, paper towels have become a basic element for cleaning and sanitation in many households.
Hand washing sanitation

Placing a roll of paper towels near the kitchen sink and bathroom for use after handwashing is an effective way to reduce germs. Hand washing is the best single device against germs. Dr. Harley A. Rotbart, a physician at the Denver Children's Hospital and author of "Germ Test your Children: The complete guide to protecting your family from infections", says that wiping your hands with a paper towel after you wash them gets rid of the last Tra The germs, instead of using an electronic dryer that leaves your hands wet and a reused towel that can house more germs.

Replacing the sponge

Paper towels can be used to clean counters and surfaces in the kitchen instead of the reuse of a sponge. Germs can live in warm, humid places such as sponges. Using a sponge for cleaning kitchen tops and surfaces extends around germs. Germs that are caught with a sponge usually remain in the sponge and multiply. These germs then extend around the countertops of the sponge when used again. However, using a disposable paper towel eliminates the spread of germs on the kitchen surfaces, because the paper towel is pulled after each use.
Placemats

Kids can have fun doing cheap, personalized individual tablecloths of family members with paper towels. Deciding on a topic and cropping the corresponding images from a magazine. Use stickers or cut letters from a magazine to spell each person's name. Trim the paper towel to fit into a non-heat plastic sheet. Carefully arrange the ornaments and letters on the paper towel and center it on the clear side of the plastic sheet. Peel the strip from the top half of the plastic sheet and quickly press down on the mat to seal.
Produces cooler

The fruits and vegetables stored in the refrigerator can begin to decompose almost immediately. To slow down the decomposition process, place paper towels on the bottom of the fruit and vegetable drawer in the refrigerator. Paper towels absorb excess moisture that makes fruit and vegetables rot. Paper towels also make cleaning the wastebasket easier.

How do you absorb paper towels?

 Unusual containers

As to how the water is carried out inside a rigid, hard vessel, such as a bowl or mug, it can be baffling to try to figure out how a porous, soft object like a sponge, cloth or disposable paper towel , it can absorb and retain water. A paper towel manages to keep water on the basis of a different scientific principle to those that retain water in a cup, one that works because of the soft towel shape and many tiny holes, which create surface tension.
Capillary action

If you look well on the surface of a paper towel, you will see that it is full of small pores and gaps, something that mimics a sponge. In fact, many super-absorbent towels are designed to be more of type sponge in their fibers and the construction of cloth fabric, because by imitating the shape of the sponge, the towel can have the same absorbent power.

Kirkland Signature Premium Big Roll Paper Towels 12-roll, 160 Sheets Per Roll
Kirkland Signature Premium Big Roll Paper Towels 12-roll, 160 Sheets Per Roll

These many small holes and gaps between the fibers of the towel can contain water due to surface tension, also known as Wick action or capillary action. Capillary action is the small amount of natural elasticity that occurs between the water molecules, keeping them up united.

Every little space on the surface of the paper towel has its own small "bubble" of surface tension. These bubbles are formed when the towel contacts the liquid because the liquid in each small space is kept separate from the liquid in other pores and pockets. This allows the liquid bubbles to keep in place and even sucked up, as each pocket contains so little water that the intermolecular attraction is stronger than the force of gravity on the liquid.
Writhing

If you squeeze a paper towel, it will be expelled from the water. This is because the act of squeezing the towel breaks the surface tension of the pockets to be the compression of the spaces, forcing the molecules of the liquid to flow together and be loaded down by gravity.

Many companies rely on automatic dispensers with motion sensors to dispense a paper towel. When the sensor detects movement, the dispenser emits a perforated plate. The desired length of each towel can be adjusted when the device is unlocked.

As proof of the quality of paper towels

When buying paper towels, it can often be difficult to determine which product is best suited to your needs. The quality of paper towels is tested based on two factors: strength and absorption capacity. Another factor, of course, is the cost, but losing paper towels due to their poor quality only translates into spending extra money to compensate. Therefore, it is best to choose this product for home based on the amount of use that can come out from a single sheet.

Paper Towel or Air Dryer: Which is better?

If you are a person concerned about your own health, have you ever wondered more than once after washing your hands in a public toilet, which would be more hygienic at the time of drying, paper towel or air dryer?

Use those individual paper towels or dryer systems that use air jets or hot air, found in some places less often than sheets of paper?

Another issue that may sadly pass through the minds of fewer people is the impact that each of these media can have on the environment. What would be worth more: the production of countless sheets of paper and the disposal of them or the expense of electric energy caused by air blowing machines?

Whatever your doubt about drying hands outside our homes, where using a shared towel would obviously be much more unhygienic than any of the other options, let's try to elucidate as much as possible about this and answer that question which has caused great friction on the part of the stakeholders, both in the producers of the sheets of paper and in the manufacturers of the dryers.

Studies Show Air Dryer Risk

When they came on the market, air dryers seemed the perfect solution not to waste paper. It appeared that the dispute paper towel or air dryer would be closed in favor of the dryer.

However, studies such as those at the prestigious University of Westminster in England have shown that while on the one hand they are a little more economical, on the other hand they generate less hygiene and health, since they carry greater risks of bacterial transmission. In addition, they cause user dissatisfaction as they do not completely dry their hands.

Paper Towel: Faster and More Efficient

Most people, outside their daily environment, wash and soapy their hands in the shortest possible time. The average time used is 11 seconds, with a slight variation between men and women, since these are more careful.

This time leaves residual germs on the skin, which can be removed more effectively by disposable paper towels.

Paper towels are also more effective than cotton towels in reducing bacteria on hand drying.

Air Dryer Generates Germ Proliferation
Few use the air units for the required 30 seconds. The men give up after 19.6 seconds and the women after 25.4 seconds.

Thus, about 40% of users prefer to rub their hands on their clothes or use handkerchiefs to complete drying, creating germ-friendly situations. While paper towels help to remove bacteria during drying, the use of hot air dryers greatly increases their amount.

So, Paper Towel or Air Dryer?

Airborne: Many germs harmful to human health are in fact transmitted by the air current.

Temperature Factor: Most of the bacteria that cause intestinal infection such as: salmonella and staphylococcus aureus develop more easily between temperatures ranging from 20 to 45 degrees celsius. Which one do you prefer to dry your hands with?

Time Spent: It's a fact, people prefer to spend as little time as possible inside the bathroom. The drying process of the air dryers does not contribute to user satisfaction.

Risk of Contamination:
The use of air dryers in hospitals is completely inadequate. The directed air jet in the hands helps the spread of the microorganisms and there is the serious risk of cross-contamination.

Wet Floor: Air dryers are generally more expensive, are available in fewer numbers and far from the sinks. The user walks the way to the device more frequently.

Excess Noise: Air Dryers generate noise from 50 dB. The sounds produced in this range cause a great sensation of discomfort to the human ears.

Operational Cost: Air dryers are more expensive in continued maintenance. There is a false promise that they by avoiding paper use have less environmental impact and are less expensive.

And the high cost with electric power to be able to work? We only source raw material from reforested areas of sustainable management, and the manufacturing processes are all certified.

Who Likes Rows? In the bathrooms of great flow is very common, before the apparatuses of air, the presence of rows. The use of paper towels is collective and can be done simultaneously by many people. Waiting queue for air dryer

Paper towel or air jet? Find out what's more hygienic to dry your hands

Research done on hospital toilets in Europe helps to clarify this issue

Did you know that the way you dry your hands in the bathroom may be even more important than washing them?

With the premise of preserving the environment, many public toilets offer air-jet appliances instead of paper towels. However, a study of hospital restrooms in the United Kingdom, France and Italy has shown that paper is the most recommended: jets spread far more germs.

Published in the Journal of Hospital Infection, the survey revealed that sites that had air dryers had a higher rate of bacterial contamination, including fecal and antibiotic resistant.

- When people use the air dryer, the microbes are expelled and spread through the bathroom. They create an aerosol effect, contaminating the device itself, the sink, the floor and other surfaces, "Mark Wilcox, a professor of medical microbiology at the institution, told Leeds University website.

Although the study considered only health homes, the rule is the same for other environments such as restaurant restrooms and shopping malls, for example. Biomedical Roberto Figueiredo, known as Dr. Bacteria, explains that even after washing, some bacteria remain in the hands:

- If you wipe them with paper, it will reduce the remaining microorganisms by 40%. When using air, you can increase them by 250%. But why? Because the appliance absorbs the air that it has in the bathroom, which is highly contaminated, and concentrates it in the hands.

Other than that, the expert says the air jets still have the potential to spread the germs to a very large area, up to four feet away.

Some women tired of the havoc they cause on their hair and do not want to use a towel, they prefer to dry their hair with a paper towel. This alternative method comes with the promise of a practical, effective and non-harsh drying of yarns.

The paper towel contains properties that have the power to better absorb water from the wires. By touching the paper in the threads, the water penetrates easily and does not generate that rub-scrub effect, preventing friction and the appearance of frizz. With this technique it is also possible to control the volume and avoid breaking the wires.
