How to fix a wooden bed frame

Although attractive, versatile and cheap, wooden bed bases are less durable then metal bed frames. An easy way to maintain the desired look and versatility of a wooden bed frame, while also increasing its longevity, is to re-enforce a shabby, wooden bed frame with angled steel and wood uprights. transverse planks. With a little help from the local metal store, the steel crossbars are relatively cheap and easy to build.

Instructions

1 Remove the old frame infrastructure from the wooden bed.

2 Clear any bedpost to the bed runner joints, securing a sturdy perimeter frame to the bed.

3 Cut two angular steel struts 90 degrees long. The length of the straps is determined by the length of the bed structure. Cut the struts 2 inches shorter than the length of the mattress box spring.

4 Drill a series of 3 / holes 16 inches along one side of the steel struts 90 degree angle; The holes should be 3 to 4 inches apart (these holes are used to attach the braces 90 degree angle to the structure of the side bed stirrup). Along the opposite side of the 90 degree angle miter, drill four 1/4 inch holes equidistant along the underside of the strut angle (these holes will be used for the bolt to the wood planks transverse to the angle uprights ).

5 Using 1 1/4-inch video screws, screw the metal brackets to the bed frame with the lower angle flush with the side channel plates of the bed frame.

6 Cut four wooden crossed planks. The length of the planks will be determined by the width of the wooden bed frame. Cut the planks 1/2 inch shorter than the width of the mattress frame.

7 with drill and countersunk a hole at each end of the hardwood cross planks and bolt to the struts 90 degree angle.

Tips and warnings

  •     Most metal warehouses will cut their steel struts from the length angle, as well as pre-drill the 1 / 4- and 3/16 inch fixing holes.

Instructions

1 Remove the mattress and all the filling from the bed structure, exposing the metal structure itself. Carefully slide the frame out of the wall, exposing the front edge of the entire frame.

2 Slide the headboard into place where you want it to sit after installation. Make sure you stand in the right place. Have someone hold the headboard firmly in place to ensure it remains straight.

3 Carefully slide the bed frame to the headboard so that the holes in the front of the weft line are aligned with the screw holes in the head. Some headers come with bolts pre-installed in the holes.

4 Press the right side of the frame firmly against the headboard. Drive the bolts through the back of the headboard so that they protrude from the holes in the front. Attach the nuts to the screws and tighten them as much as possible as you press the headboard to the metal bed frame.

5 Repeat the nut installation and the screw on the left side of the header. Pull gently on each side to make sure the pieces are firmly fastened. Slide the headboard frame and the bed into position. Reassemble the mattress and the filling.

Tips and warnings

  •     Most header kits come with screws, nuts, bolts and installation instructions. Be sure to read and follow the manufacturer's specific instructions, since different designs will have different requirements.
  •     If your headboard and bed frame do not arrive aligned for easy installation, manufacturers sell adapters that connect the bolt holes in the frame to those in the head. You will have to remove the screws from the head of the bed and install the adapter before fixing the frame of the bed. Follow the specific instructions on the product if you have problems.

How to fix a fracture in a wooden bed frame

Wooden beds have side rails that connect the footboard to the head of the bed. The wooden boards that make up the two side rails can divide. In order for the bed to be usable, you must replace the side rail or repair it. The repair of a fracture in the wooden frame is very similar to the repair of a fracture in any piece of wood. Some wood glue is committed to repairing the fracture and a plywood patch will strengthen the frame.

Instructions

1 Position the side rail on a flat surface and bend it enough to open the split. Squeeze the glue into the split and spread it around using a cotton swab. If the wood has multiple fractures, spread the glue in each division. Shield separated each piece of wood with glue.

2 Place the clamps through the side rail in the split and tighten them. A clamp in the middle and another clamp is necessary every six to eight inches throughout the separation. Clean any glue that squeezes from the divisions immediately with a damp cloth.

3 Wait one hour before removing the clamps. Yellow wood glue bonds so well with wood, the bond is stronger than wood by itself. A division board often has damage that it can not see, and a patch of reinforcement is often necessary.

4 Measure the width of the side rail and the length of the division. Cut a piece of 1 / plywood 4 inches, eight inches longer than the split, with a width that is 1/2 inches smaller than the side rail is very wide.

5 Fasten the plywood to the side rail so that the splitting is superimposed by four inches at each end and centered up and down the rail. Drill four rows of countersunk pilot holes with three equally spaced holes in each row. The rows run up and down the patch and spread evenly across the width of the patch. Keep the holes 1/2 inch from the edges of plywood.

6 Plywood screw for the side rail patch with wood screws and a Philips screwdriver. Do not use a drill because accidentally over-driving the screws will cause more damage to the wood.

7 Rub the wax pencil over any part of the split that remain visible to blend into the finish. The color of the division in the direction of the grain of the wood, which extends along the length of the lane.

Tips and warnings

  •     Patches require extra long rows of screws for every 12 inches in length of more than 24 inches.
  •     Do not screw in the split, and try to keep screws at least an inch away from it.
  •     The 1/4 inch patch leaves enough space for most of the bed springs to adapt, but check to make sure the spring will still fit between the rails with the patch in place.

How to repair a noisy bed frame

In this article: Find the cause Stop the noise Test a quick fix

There is nothing more frustrating than sleeping badly at night due to the noise of the bed. Luckily, you do not need to spend a lot of money on a new bed frame to end the problem. If you identify the origin of the noise and adjust and lubricate the joints of the bed frame, you can eliminate the noise and go back to sleep peacefully.

Part 1
Find the cause

    1
Remove the mattress and the bed base from the bed frame. The base is made of wood and is located under the mattress. Place the mattress and the bed base on the floor. [one]
Image titled Fix a Squeaking Bed Frame Step 2
    2
Check if the mattress is the one that grinds. You must discard it as the cause of the noise before you start working on the bed frame. Get on the mattress and move around a bit. If it grinds, the mattress is the culprit. [two]
Image titled Fix a Squeaking Bed Frame Step 3
    3
Check if the noise comes from the bed base. Apply pressure to the top of the bed base and move it. If it makes noise, it is most likely that the problem is the base and not the bed frame. [3]
Image titled Fix a Squeaking Bed Frame Step 4
    4
Swing the legs of the bed frame and listen carefully. Noise can occur where the legs are attached to the rest of the bed frame, so try to balance each leg. Try to identify the exact place of the noise.
Image titled Fix a Squeaking Bed Frame Step 5
    5
Move the slats on the bottom of the bed frame. The slats are the wooden or metal tables that go from one side to the other of the bed frame. They are the ones that hold the mattress and the bed base. Apply pressure on the slats to know if they cause noise. [4]

The friction of wood against wood is often the cause of noise.

Part 2
Stop the noise

    1
Get the right tools for the part of the bed frame you will be working with. Verify what holds the bed frame together in the area where the noise comes from. If it is a screw, get a screwdriver of the corresponding size. If it's a bolt, you're going to need a wrench.
    2
Adjust the sounding board. Occasionally, the cause of a noisy bed frame is a simple loose joint. Before disassembling the bed frame, adjust the screws and bolts in the area where the noise comes from. You will know that they are well adjusted when you can not turn them. [5]
    3
Use a metal washer if you have trouble adjusting a bolt. If you can not fully adjust a bolt against the frame, place a metal washer between the frame and the bolt to fill the excess space. [6]
    4
Disassemble the board if the noise still persists. With the help of the tools, loosen and remove the bolts or screws that hold the gasket. Thread the loose screws or bolts into a plastic bag so you do not lose them. Separate the two pieces of the bed frame that make up the board. [7]
    5
Lubricate each component of the board. Apply a lubricant to any surface with both parts of the joint coming into contact, including bolts, hooks or flat surfaces. [8] Try any of the following lubricants:
Paraffin. It is a type of wax that is sold in the form of a bar, which facilitates its rubbing on surfaces. [9]
Lubricant WD-40. It is a spray lubricant that is effective in metal bed frames, but ends up drying. [10]
Candle wax. If you do not get a commercial lubricant, try candle wax. Rub it on the surface as you would with any other waxy lubricant. [eleven]
White grease or silicone lubricant. Buy white grease or silicone lubricant at the hardware store and apply it to the joint components to control the noise.
    6
Reassemble the bed frame. Replace all the screws and bolts you have removed and tighten them with the tools. Make sure you adjust them completely to avoid causing more noise by accident.
    7
Listen carefully to determine if the noise has disappeared. Swing the bed to see if you still hear some noise. If the noise persists, try to identify where it comes from. If the noise originates in a different board than the one you have adjusted, follow the same steps you have done for the other board. If the same joint causes noise, adjust the screws or bolts that hold the joint together a little more.

Part 3
Test a quick solution

    1
Line the bed frame slats with old clothes. Use shirts or socks that you no longer wear. The fabric will prevent the mattress or bed base from rubbing against the frame and grinding. [12]
    2
Fill the holes with cork in case you have a wooden bed frame. Check if the bed frame has some space where the mattress or bed base can move and rub against the frame. Place cork in the recesses so that each component of the bed is firmly in place. [13]
Image titled Fix a Squeaking Bed Frame Step 15
    3
Put a towel under any uneven leg of the bed frame. One leg is uneven when it does not touch the ground. Place a towel in the space between the leg and the floor so that the frame does not wobble and squeak. [14]
Image titled Fix a Squeaking Bed Frame Step 16
    4
Put a book under the mattress near the area where the noise originates. If it comes from one of the slats, remove the mattress and the bed base and place a book on the noisy ribbon. Replace the mattress and base on the bed frame. [fifteen]

Tips

If there is a hole in one of the joints that is favoring the noise, apply a strip of felt between the two surfaces that meet and form the joint to fill the empty space. [16]

How do I prevent a bed frame from squeaking?

I recently bought a second-hand wooden bed frame. Everything is fine, except that it screams a lot when I move in it (ahem). Any advice to fix the annoying squeak?

Tester101
Is there much movement involved (in the frame)? How do the joints (screws, screws, nails) join?

Tom Squires
If I push it then it has something to give. The joints are joined by a piece of metal with three slots that are inserted in the sides.

Tester101
An image of the joints can help.

Tom Squires
Yes, I probably explained it wrong. I will try to publish one tonight.

(ahem) "move" on the couch, in the kitchen, in the shower, or ...;)

I fixed my metal frame by placing leather patches between the parts that were rubbed. The wooden frame is a bit more complicated: it is not so easy to identify where the pieces are rubbed, but this is the first initial step. I'd say check all the joints and see if you can tighten the bolts or add glue to the moving parts.

Basically, the noise comes from the parts that rub against each other. If you can eliminate the rubbing, or put something between the parts of the brush, that would reduce the noise.

Tom Squires
Paste the joints with PVA possibly?

trailmax
Do not think that PVA will work as a permanent solution, but it will help to identify the problem

chris
You can take some felt or other thick material and cut grooves to pass the metal parts. This will help both to reduce the wood on the noise of the wood and to tighten the joints a little.

loopDev
Most of the time with some wood, it is not the rubbing of the wood that is squeaking, it is its nails, screws, bolts, or what holds them together that touches the wood that squeaks. I would like to surround the frame of your bed and tighten everything. If you find one that does not tighten, you can use some wood glue in the hole to help with the squeaks (if you do not plan to disarm it in the future :))

Martha
Does the bed have slats?
I was ready to throw in a divan for being incredibly noisy, but before doing so, I replaced the laths of luxury laminate wood that I used to have with the cheap wooden slats. The chirps stopped immediately. It turns out, the fancy slats were just a little too big, and the ends rubbed against the frame at the slightest provocation, producing the noise.
I am still using the luxury slats in a different bed, where they work perfectly. The point is, neither the bed nor the slats were guilty; The problem was with the combination.

Tom Squires
If I'm using slats

Tester101
@Tom: does the frame squeak when the slats are not in place? I guess most of the noise comes from the rubbing of the slats (this would be especially frequent during the curtains ... "make noise" movements). You can try to coat the ends of the slats with something that reduces friction (baby powder, silicone spray) or try to secure the slats to the rail (so they can not move). Also check the box spring, inexpensive box springs can be very noisy.

Glenn
We have just solved the problem of squeaky slats. We cut strips of those cheap blankets for egg boxes and wrap them in any place where the wooden slats meet the frame of the bed. No more crunches during fun time!

Steven
Did you just wrap the frame in the foam material?

Fiasco laboratories
Bees wax or paraffin. It is likely that your local hardware store has both, since they are used to lubricate the drawer guides in an older carpentry shop.
Tap the board to apply it where the wood is rubbed. Raise the slats and apply them there too.
Beeswax is slightly sticky and will adhere to the metal, so it will probably also work on the hooks of the metal joint.
Then, squeeze everything that is loose in the head and side rails and everything should disappear.

L. Rostron
Every time I pick up boards from the wooden floor, I spray talcum powder (baby) where the tables sit. The same thing happens, although it is much more difficult to reach the shrill areas, wooden stairs. Obviously, it depends on whether you can access the point where the wood meets the wood, but that is the area to "lubricate". Unfortunately, soft woods tend to wear out and then you need to start over.

Spray some WD40 on the metal parts (screws), just do this and it works wonders!

If you sleep as a couple, it is likely that he or she has also woken up during the night due to its sound. Why are bedspring making noise ? How to get a box spring without noise?

Silence is very important for rest. That's why our bed should be the solution and not the problem to fall asleep. In this post we will give you some tips and explanations of why your mattress makes noise and what solution you can find.

Ecos Living Solid Wood Platform Bed Frame with Headboard (King)

Why there are sommieres that make noises

There are bases and bed bases that make noises for very different reasons. Noise always tells us that something is loose and generates vibrations with movement.

They can be the legs (most of the time), which are loose or badly screwed .

When a very intensive use of the bed base has been made, perhaps over several years, or has been moved from one side to another for various reasons, the nuts and bolts may be loosened , or else the clamps may be somewhat deformed. It can also happen that our mattress makes noise when we are not using standard size legs suitable for the mattress base or upholstered base, or we place a lot of weight on the mattress frequently.

We can know that the problem is in the legs very easily. Just sit or lie on the bed and another person observe the reaction of the legs and structure. In this case the sound will be accompanied by some instability of the bed frame, so the rest will be complicated and the mattress will tend to move too much.

In this case, the solution may be to screw the legs back to make sure they are firm and do not generate noise. However, if the nuts, clamps or screws are badly worn, they will tend to loosen and your bed frame will continue making noises. In this case we recommend that you buy new bed bases, according to the measurements of your bed base.

Maybe the bed frame you chose was basic, of not much quality

Maybe you bought it to get by or the seller who offered it to you said "they are all the same", that "it's not worth paying more for the same" ... The fact is that there are mattress finishes that favor no noise

For example, if the bed bases are subject to the frame of the steel structure by rubber tips , then better. You are minimizing the sound. What is more expensive? Yes, but it can be justified if what you are looking for is absence of noise.

They can also be the sheets of the bed bases

When the problem is in the slatted sheets , the type of noise we hear may be something different, for example from woods that creak when we move or lie down.

This type of sound is a clear indicator that we need to renew our bed base , since it is likely that some of the sheets are damaged, are about to break or have been left loose.

The slatted sheets were not manufactured before now, they are protected with layers of lacquer, epoxy or are finished with anti-moisture vinyl, and they protect them from humidity and temperature changes that favor the sheets are losing flexibility.

Sleeping in this type of mattress does not guarantee the stability and tranquility you need to enjoy a good rest, so you should not wait another day to change base or bed base. In addition, not having a base or mattress in conditions can affect the useful life of your mattress , being on a less rigid and unstable basis.

And it may be that your floor is uneven

Sometimes we can go crazy looking for that sheet that makes the noise, or that has been damaged ... and what happens is that the ground is uneven. This also happens a lot with the canapés: my canapé makes noise! , and after a mounting team arrives at the user's house ... we realize that the problem is on the floor: if the support points of the sofa -also in the case of the mattress- are not at the same height, the base limps, and by forcing the point or the points of support to reach the ground, the structure, the perimeter is forced, and makes noise.

How to take better care of your mattress to prevent it from deteriorating?

There are box springs that begin to make noises shortly after buying them. And the problem is that we have subjected them to a weight for which they are not adapted, perhaps because we are using an inadequate type of mattress or because they are low resistant beds that are not prepared for certain types of mattresses and people of a certain physical complexion.

One of the ways to prevent your mattress from deteriorating in a short time is to make sure that you choose a good combination of mattress and mattress for the person who will sleep in it. Also try not to put too much weight on the mattress too often. In this way both your mattress and your mattress can have a perfect coupling and you can take better care of both one and the other.

In Colchones.es we try to help you choose the most suitable mattress base or base for your mattress . If you are tired of the mattresses that make noises and you are also going to buy a new mattress in our store, you will see that below the description we suggest some bed bases or recommended bases to use with that mattress.

When do I change the mattress and what mattress without noise do I need?

The materials do not last forever, this must never be forgotten. When you notice that your mattress is making noises and shows clear signs of having lost rigidity and stability , it is time to change the mattress.

For those who do not want to have noise problems with the legs , a fixed sofa without legs is the most appropriate, since it is attached to the floor, so it is the most comfortable and avoid those uncomfortable noises that make us wake up when we least expect it.

However, it is true that canapés can be more expensive, so if you do not want to spend too much, it is true that there is also a wide variety of steel frame upholstered bases and bases , high strength and great rigidity with a long life that will allow us to sleep without our bed making noise.

For those who prefer an upholstered base, Flex's breathable Tapiflex base offers great durability, stability and strength. It also has a double structure with 5 reinforcing metal crossbeams and is ideal to combine with spring mattresses, so it can be a solution for you if you are tired of your bedspring making noises.

HOW TO MAKE A DOUBLE BED WITH PALLETS

Make a bed with pallets? Yes, and in a very simple and economical way.

And that even the headboard is included.

You will only need 6 pallets, which will have to undergo a fungicide treatment if they are recycled, sanded and brushed to leave it smooth and without splinters, give the varnish or paint layer you want, and start assembling.

HOW TO MAKE A BED WITH PALLETS
Dispose of the pallets as in this image and connect them with the help of screws or metal brackets.

This example is for a low pallet bed, which will require a wide mattress, however, resorting to another height of pallets to raise the height of the bed, as always, to taste of each person.

You can choose to put wheels under the bed, yes, good wheels that can withstand the weight of the entire structure.

The wheels are very comfortable because they allow the mobility of the bed and that for cleaning always goes phenomenal.

If you are not going to move the bed, you need only place the pallets directly on the floor, like this example.

Once you see the result you can give it the color you want. In this example they have resorted to a very dark oil.

Consult in your usual hardware store or in online stores the different shades of oil for wood that there is, so that you can choose between a very natural and clear color, a color honey or darker colors like this one.

If you are one of the ones who adores the color, join the chalk Paint and bet on the pastel shades of chalk that are so good results on the wood. The result is spectacular, don't be afraid to play with the colors!

After giving the color to all the wood and once dry, it is time to join the pallets together so that there is a compact base. To do this, use metal brackets and screws to fix the pallets together.

The result cannot be more beautiful. In this case, they have even decorated the headboard and the bed with abstract drawings applying the technique of decoupage.cama de matrimonio de palets

The structure of bed and other bedroom furniture

To see all those elements that we talked about, we are going to go from the essential to the accessory.

The bed structure

The piece of furniture that occupies the most visual space in the bedroom is the bed. Unwillingly, and unless we have a very large space, will always be the center of attention that captures the look as you enter the room. Therefore, it is important to take care of its appearance. We have two possibilities: a bed structure or a conventional bed with headboard.

The bed structure is a piece of furniture with a mattress and mattress. We can find bed structures in infinity of finish and designs. From the most modern to the most classic, through designs in wrought iron, wood ... The main advantage of these structures is that they are a decorative element in themselves and are very solid. As a disadvantage, we can say that they occupy more space than a conventional one, so it will have to be taken into account for smaller bedrooms.

In Colchón Exprés we have perfect bed structures to decorate your bedroom with style and without sacrificing the comfort and quality that characterizes us.

In the case of deciding on a conventional bed, that is, a base and mattress, we can add a headboard. The great advantage of this option is that it occupies less space than a bed structure and that we can also add the type of base we want without restrictions.

The size of the bed

The beds can be classified into four basic sizes , with their varieties:

  •     Individual, more suitable for people who live alone or children's rooms.
  •     Double beds , for two people. They are the most common.
  •     King Size beds , the largest, which we often find in hotels. They measure 2x2 meters and, when buying them, you are investing in space and comfort, although it is recommended if this piece of furniture is not going to occupy too much in your room.
  •     The so-called Queen beds are the intermediate step between matrimonial and maxitamaño. Its length ranges between 1.90 cm and 2 meters, while the width would be between 1.75 cm and 1.80 centimeters.

Most common materials for bed support

The bed support material will also determine how it will be together. Wood is the most common in the manufacture of beds, so it will cost us less to find a great variety. It is a very suitable material because of the warmth it brings.

Also, sometimes, we have seen a structure in iron or metal. The wrought iron ones remind us of past decades and it is more unusual to see them in current constructions. Many designers, however, recover other materials such as aluminum or steel that, while not providing the same warmth as wood, also gives us good results and great versatility.

Wicker or rattan are sustainable materials that are becoming fashionable for headboards and pieceros beds, although the structure is made of other materials. They are firm, luminous materials that will give us a touch of fresh air and nature in the bedrooms. Another variety is offered by headboards and pieceros made in fabric.

The traditional beds

Regarding the design, this will define the shape and structure of the base of the bed. Traditional beds are usually panel-type (in English, they are called Panel Bed) , usually made of wood. They have a headboard and a support for parallel feet and connected by the piece that serves as the base for the mattress. Within these traditional beds, the market surprises with a great variety of materials, models and designs. The headboard and footboard can be of the same height, although the headboard is usually higher and have very different shapes.

Something similar is offered by beds that, instead of panels, make four wooden poles , one in each corner. This type of post bed is very elegant and suitable for couples. Like the previous one, the most usual material is wood.

The headboards of these more traditional beds can vary greatly in terms of shapes (simply square, rounded, asymmetrical, with curvature ...), as does the panel at the feet, which can be straight, concave, convex , etc.

Industrial beds, simply stand

Many people are committed to the simplicity and spaciousness of a bed without a headboard , which simply consists of a structure and a mattress. This type of beds are very suitable for modern and minimalist designs, while the others will be better for rustic or classic styles.

The weight of the decoration in this type of beds will fall on the quilt and other elements to put on the wall of the headboard, like the paintings.

Scandinavian style, simplicity

Between the traditional and the industrial ones, there would be Scandinavian-style beds , which we sometimes see in stores like Ikea. It is a simple structure that incorporates a headboard that is fixed to the wall (without a footboard). This headboard can come with integrated tables or even a shelf to facilitate storage in the room.

To save space: murfy beds, trundle beds or with drawers

If we have a space problem or are thinking of buying this bed for guest bedrooms, the "Murfy" beds will be a good option to consider. At first sight, they look like a normal living room furniture, with shelves and drawers, but, in its central part, we will find a folding bed.

Other solutions for storage, ideal for the children's room , are the trundle beds , which keep a second bed below the usual one. It is incredibly functional for visits. Bunk beds or bunk beds are also an interesting option for children's rooms.

In addition to all these and the so-called sofa-beds, we have another option that will allow to keep the stays much more collected. They are those with multiple drawers incorporated in the base. They are ideal for storing our belongings and clothes, for example, clothes from another season.

Beds with canopy

For those dreamers who want a legendary bed, four-poster beds will be very appropriate. They are those whose structure extends upwards in vertical and is usually covered with thin curtains , usually of vaporous fabric.

The canopy can be presented in a square shape or with a central support point so that the curtain falls in a triangular shape. The advantage of this bed is that it increases the privacy of whoever is going to use it and protects from light or cold.

Round beds

Who has never dreamed of having a round bed? They leave aside the usual rectangular shape and opt for roundness , taking a big step in terms of design.

The great disadvantage is the space they occupy, we must have a very large room to be able to have a round bed and that this gives us the necessary functionality.

Night Therapy Platform Metal Bed Frame/Foundation Set(SmartBase + Metal Brackets for Headboard & Footboard + Bed Skirt - Queen) - No Box Spring needed

Building a bed frame

The whole business of making things with raised panels has given me lots of thought over recent years. But router bit sets for making raised panels are relatively expensive, and very limited in terms of thickness of material they can handle.

They also prevent the use of mortise and tenon joints on the frame, because the throat depth on the router bits is too small to accommodate much of a tenon. So I did an experiment to see how well I could shape the frame more by hand. I just made the panel flat (no need for a bit), and used a quarter round router bit as far as I could into the corner, and then carved all the way into the corner with a chisel. So I could approximate the effect of the raised panel router bits this way.

Although it was labor intensive, I was reasonably satisfied with the results. I would not like a whole kitchen this way, but I figured it might be good for a project.

I figured this approach would be nice for a headboard for a bed, and I wanted to build a new bed frame anyway. So I bought the lumber and started working away at it. I decided to go with a non-square shape for the panels. I first cut out the basic shape with a bandsaw, and then put it together with square mortise and tenon joints.

For the panel, I decided to use some very nice 5-ply 5/16 inch birch plywood that came from a discarded shipping crate. My cheap router bit set came with a T slot cutter of the same thickness, but that bit had no guide roller. So I made a fixed guide, and bolted that to the base router - see image above right. That worked surprisingly well.

After I cut the groove into the frame for the panel, I realized that I could not use the roller guide on my quarter round bit, because I had a grove right where the roller guide would press against the wood. Oops! I could have made another wooden guide, like I did with the other bit router. But I had been thinking of the whole bed a bit more of a hand-carved look, so I just carved an approximation of the quarter round profile with a draw knife and a spoke shave.

I used the same approach to carve the outside edge of the headboard, especially because I did not have the right shape of router bit for the profile I wanted.

The next step was to make the posts for the bed. These I glued together out of two pieces of construction lumber to get the right thickness. Two 2x4's would do the trick, but I have found that I can get a lot better quality lumber by buying 2x10x8 pieces. These, by necessity, have to come from larger trees, and tend to be higher quality. The price per unit of lumber is of course more for these, but using construction lumber for furniture is in general remove cheap, so it does not add much to the cost.

For the tops of the posts, I decided on a ball shaped top. I wanted this to be an integral part of the posts, so this required turning the whole posts on my lathe. Now, my lathe is quite big and heavy, but the lathe was not quite long enough to mount the posts for the headboard side of the bed. It is very low tech, it is easy to build an extension for the tail stock of it out of wood.

I left a little bit of wood past the knob, which I cut off afterwards. That way, the hole I had to drill for the dead center to turn in, and the oil I had to put on it to let it run smooth, were cut away.

The next step was to attach the headboard to the posts. Normally, for this type of joint, I would use a mortise and tenon joint. But, I found myself unable to cut the tenons at the ends of the headboard, because I did not have enough ceiling to put the headboard pieces vertically into my tenon jig on the table saw. Strength for this joint was not critical, so I just decided to join it with dowels.

To get the dowel holes aligned precisely, I had the idea of making a drill out of a piece of hardwood, and just drilling through that to get repeatable hole alignment.

This worked well in terms of getting the holes aligned precisely, but with a catch. I could not fit the headboard in my drill press, so I just drilled the holes with a hand drill. I'm usually pretty good at judging right angles, but it's hard to do while also pushing down really hard on a hand drill. For two of the holes, I was about five degrees off in one axis. I compensated for this by tapping on one side of the dowels for those holes, and just pounding it with a rubber mallet when I attached the headboard to the posts. I have since then built to horizontal boring jig to avoid this problem.

This being a "proper" wooden bed, it has bed rails on the sides of the mattress. I'm using these bed rail hooks, so the whole bed can be taken apart easily. I bought these at The Home Depot. The Home Depot calls them "bed rail clips", but you will have more success on the internet searching for "bed rail hooks". Last time I checked, The Home Depot only carried the 4 "bed rail hooks, which would be too small for this bed. through the bed rail so that the screws holding the bed rail clips actually have some cross-grain hardwood to thread in. These are blind holes, so they can only be seen from the mattress side when the bed is assembled - see image at right.

The side rails also have a ledge on the inside to hold the slats (not yet mounted in the picture at right). The slats are essentially supported by the bed rails.

The foot board for the most part is the same as the head board, but shorter, less curved, and without any panels in it.

The bed was too large for me to be able to assemble it in my workshop , so I did not actually assemble it completely until after it was all done and varnished. The first time I put it together was in my driveway. After I took this photo, I shortened the legs a little bit.

The next test assembly was in my living room with the mattress in it. At that point I decided to taper the ends of the slats so they would sit a bit further down in the bed frame. This lowered the mattress down by about a centimeter. And then finally, I set it up in my bedroom.

Building a sofa bed

After I built the sunroom on my house in 1997, watching the sun come up in the window one afternoon I figured under that window would be a perfect spot to take a nap. So in 1998 I set out to build a suitable piece of napping furniture for that spot.

A couch would have worked just as well, but I really did not know how to make a couch, or at least not the cushions part of it. So I decided to build a daybed. I wanted this day to be suitable as a couch as well. To make it usable as a couch, I wanted the mattress to be narrower than a regular twin size bed, but where to find a narrow mattress? Asking at mattress stores proved fruitless.

Boyd Sleep Montana Upholstered Platform Bed Frame with Headboard: Linen, Grey, King
Boyd Sleep Montana Upholstered Platform Bed Frame with Headboard: Linen, Grey, King

But eventually I found 'Waterloo bedding', which is sort of a factory outlet. They make mattresses for other companies. When I asked them what sizes did they have, they responded with 'what size do you want to make'. Puzzled, I asked further. The surcharge for nonstandard sizes was only 10%. Even with the surcharge, the price was still much less than from a mattress store! So I ordered a custom mattress for my daybed project. Lesson learned: Avoid mattress stores if you can!

Another alternative, that I had not thought of at the time would have been to buy a foam mattress, and cut it to size.

The design I came up with was one that allowed me to maximize the use of the Mortising machine which I had earlier that year.

So I decided that the ends and sides would consist of lots of vertical slats, each of which would be mortified into the rails above and below. The edges of the 1/2 "thick slats I rounded with a 1/4" router bit, so that the profile of the slat would fit into the elongated holes my mortising machine would cut with a 1/2 "router bit.

While I'm really happy with the result, I would not build it this way again. The problem with this approach is that when gluing the pieces together, especially for the back rail, all the slats have to be put into the holes with glue, and the frame pressed together at once. There's only so much time before the glue starts to set, and with 26 slats in the back rail, it was very difficult getting them all to line up and into their respective holes. I did work up to the sweat and pounding it pretty hard to get it together with the glue already starting to set.

A much better approach to doing slats like this is to just cut a dice in the edge of the wood, notch the slats are the ends of the slats are square, and put them in the slot, with blocks of wood in between to fill the spaces - see illustrations below. My daybed plans also use this approach.

The frame consists of two end pieces, with bed rail clips screwed into them, that the back rail and front rail simply hook into. This makes the whole thing really easy to disassemble. I used mortise to have joints to join the end pieces together. But strength is really that critical for this part, so doweling would work just as well.

I used bed rail clips to put the whole thing together, so the piece of furniture would be easy to disassemble and move.

The best place I know of to get these bed rail clips is the Home Depot. For the clip at the top, I needed a relatively short clip because the rail was not very wide. While clips of different sizes are available, I wanted one that very much matched the clips I was using for the rails at the bottom, just shorter. The solution I ended up going to buy the same size clips for the top, and then cutting them off with a hacksaw, so that the clip with two hooks turned into a clip with just one hook. I had to throw away the other half of each clip, because I wanted two screw holes in the part that I kept.

In a later bed project I just used screws at an angle to hold the frame together, very similar to pocket holes.

To make the daybed more suitable as a couch, I beveled the top rails outward slightly, as shown at left. This makes it more comfortable to lean against the top rail. Even with pillows piled against the back and sides of the bed, one still ends up leaning against the top rail quite often. I had to laminate two pieces of spruce lumber together to make the top rail thick enough that I could have it and still have enough left over for strength. I wanted the top rail to be a bit wider anyway, because the one on the back its fairly long, and I did not want to bow too much from being leaned against. Note that I did not do anything about beveling the post in any way. Its actually difficult to read in the corner to actually have the post touch your back, so its not an issue.

Note that because of the top back rail is thicker, and you have to be on the bottom rail - see image at right.

I put some pieces of oak down through the rails for the screws holding the bed rail clips to get a better hold (see image at left). I did this with the front and back rails, although, in retrospect, for the back rails this was completely unnecessary, as the wide spacing between the top bed rail clip and the bottom one prevents any sort of substantial leverage that might occur to pull on the bed rail clips. For the rail along the front though, I feel that this is quite important. If one leans against the side of the daybed (and I do remove often) there's a bit of leverage on the bed rail clip, so having the screws thread through the cross grain of the oak dowel really helps.

I used angle iron from an old steel frame to support the slats that support the mattress.

This was not part of my original plan. Originally, I just had a 1.5 "x1.5" piece of spruce screwed to the side of the rails near the bottom to support the slats. But once I put the mattress in the frame, I found that the top of the mattress came out higher than I wanted it - I had underestimated the thickness of the mattress with mattress pad on it. Really I should have made the rails wider, but it was too late on this frame. So I replaced the wooden rails with pieces of angle iron, which allowed me to rest the slats about 3 cm lower than before. In the daybed plans I drew afterwards, I made the rails a little wider, so this kludge would not be necessary.

To space the slats evenly, I nailed them onto some thin pieces of wood. As such, the slats come out in three sections. The image above shows one of the sections in place.

I built this daybed back in 1998, before digital cameras, and just before I had a website. Hence no original photos of the current construction. But I have been using this day for years now, and it has been with the test of time. I stack pillows against the sides and back of it, so it makes a nice couch.

I usually use it with my Wheely desk It makes for a very comfortable combination for using the computer.

High Rise Metal Bed Frame with Headboard Brackets (Queen)

Building a bed

Building a bed  (with 2x4 wood)

I needed an extra bed in my old house for one of my tenants. Instead of buying one I decided to build one with construction wood

Building this bed turned out to be a one-day project. I was also a bit limited by the tools I had with me since I had already moved many of the tools from my old workshop. Therefore the only electric tools that I used in the construction of this bed were a table saw, a drill, a small electric hand brush and a belt sander.

High Rise Metal Bed Frame with Headboard Brackets (Queen)
High Rise Metal Bed Frame with Headboard Brackets (Queen)

I spent less than $ 30 on materials, although I already had the screws and dowels. If I had bought everything it would still be below $ 50.

I really did not use a single 2x4. Rather, I used pine wood from what is normally used for building structures. I used three planks of 2x8, one of 2x6, one of 2x10, and two of 2x2. All 8 feet long.

The stringers of the bed each have a 2x2 (1.5 "x1.5") attached to the inner lower edge, on which rest the slats that support the mattress. The image on the left is a sectional section of the bed illustrating this.

When we use construction wood to build furniture it is necessary to carefully select the planks to be used. Fortunately, something like the structure of a bed is heavy enough so that the slightly twisted wood can be forced to straighten when assembled.

Although the lumber is brushed, it is usually not brushed to be as smooth as would be desirable for carpentry furniture projects. I had already taken my thicknesser and the table brush from my old workshop, so it was best to use an electric hand brush. The electric hand-held brush is the size of a standard brush, but rather works like a 3 "wide table brush placed upside down. The wider boards required three strokes from side to side to be brushed. planks I still had some crests between the passes that I sanded with a belt sander.

I also brushed a quarter-inch bevel on all exposed edges. The base of the brush has a V-groove with a 45-degree angle, which allowed me to maintain a constant bevel depth if I put it on the rounded edge that brought the factory wood or on a sharp edge at 90 degrees cut result along the planks. I decided that quarter-inch bevels were part of the design in the entirety of this project.

For the bevels on the head of the boards, I simply cut them by hand with a sharp knife.

The complete design consists of a headboard and feet with a similar design, with the stringers screwed into the legs of the headboard and feet. The legs of the bed are two pieces of 2x3 joined one against another, with a hole where the stringers are screwed.

Making beautiful curves in the headboard as I did in this would have been better, but I had already taken my band saw from my old workshop. So instead I had to settle for some straight cuts.

The horizontal parts of the head and feet are attached to the posts with 5/8 "dowels, the joints with the dowels are made by drilling and glueing only through one of the 2x3 pieces that form the posts. I secured the horizontal board with the pole piece together and drilled through both pieces, so I can make sure that the holes in both pieces are aligned, even if I do them by hand with the drill. I built a work bench

The diagram on the left indicates how everything is prepared together for drilling.

The widest plank I was using for the headboard was actually a little warped, but when I secured it to drill it I also forced it to be straightened while it was held by the sergeants. After drilling the holes, I simply enclosed the dowels in place with the sergeants still in place, so that the dowels now keep it straight.

After gluing and inserting the dowels with a hammer I found that I had a small gap between the horizontal boards of the headboard and the post.

I did not have any sergeants long enough to reach the full width of the bed, so I attached two pieces of wood to the horizontal board with sergeants and used them to tighten the pieces of the joint against each other.

This requires that the two sergeants below in the photo are tight enough. I recommend you do not do this with anything other than metallic screw sergeants.

If all this seems very difficult for you, another option would be to use some 4 "long wood screws instead of wood dowels, it will not be so robust but it will be enough.

The economic cost is much lower and although we take a couple of days to manufacture it, it will be an exclusive work that we can enjoy for many years . Today we want to show you how to build the base so that a bed seems floating . Of all the DIY we have developed, this is not exactly the simplest, however the result is spectacular and you just need a little patience.

We leave you the photographs explaining step by step the procedure to get your own floating bed, attentive!

These are the basic planes of the two bases that we need.

  • Both frames are joined at the top center.
  • The lower base is made with slats 5 cm wide x 20 cm high and the upper frame with slats 5 cm wide x 10 cm high. Therefore, the measurement of the base will be: 120 cm x 170 cm x 20 cm and the measurement of the top frame will be: 170 cm x 2.10 cm x 10 cm. These are the corresponding measures for a mattress of 150 cm x 190 cm.
  • We place a wooden plank on the base to achieve a flat and smooth surface.
  • We place the headboard on the top, where we have joined the two main structures.
  • The measurements of the headboard will be 170 cm x 100 cm x 5 cm.

Once we put everything together, we sanded it to be able to paint it.

In this case a mahogany wood color was chosen to be able to give contrast with the room, but obviously the color is optional.

We placed on the edge of the structure, at the bottom, a string of LED lights of 7 meters bordering it as shown in the photograph.

This is the final result:

  • Much more impressive when we assemble the bed in the room.
  • You already have a floating bed for your bedroom, enjoy it!

Create your own sofa bed

Having a sofa bed at home may be what we need for when we invite people to sleep, but also if we want a place to relax and enjoy our free time, whether in the living room or outdoors.

If you are one of those people who are visited by family or friends over the weekend and do not have an additional room, a sofa bed is just what you need. Or maybe you like to lie on the sofa to watch a movie, read or even take a nap in the afternoon without disarming your bed.

In response to these needs that arise in many homes, in this article we will tell you how to create your own sofa bed , both for indoor and outdoor.

How to make a standard sofa bed
We will take care of creating a sofa bed made with different structures giving us the possibility of keeping the pillows or the bedding inside . When nobody is using it to sleep, it folds up and remains like a 'common' sofa.

It is essential that you take the measure well before buying or cutting the wood. You can do it according to the space you have at home.

The base is formed by four slats joined together - as if it were a frame - and four studs, one in each corner, which will be the legs. On this basis a drawer is placed, which can be of two compartments so that it has more robustness.

To make the backrest, you need two long planks that are placed horizontally at the ends of four shorter planks. Two are placed on each point and the other two are at the same distance from each other.

To reinforce this structure even more, we recommend that between each vertical plank you put a wooden board firmly attached.

Then, place a complete board on the back-it can be made of plywood-and another on the back. The part that remains free or uncovered is where the drawer and cover will go next; with respect to the latter, it will be formed by a mattress and a table attached to the drawer or trunk with hinges.

The entire structure is lined with foam and subsequently upholstered. The idea is that, when you need to use the sofa bed, open it at the height of the hinges, remove the bedding and place the mattress on top. So your guests will sleep more comfortable!

Sofa bed
How to make a sofa bed with pallets

Sure you know the famous 'pallets', those wooden structures increasingly used in crafts and DIY due to its versatility and resistance. Carpentry enthusiasts use them a lot, they are affordable - even in some places they are given away - and they are very easy to manipulate.

A pallet sofa bed can be used both for the living room of our house and for the garden, balcony or terrace. If you will use it outdoors, you should bear in mind that the wood will need additional treatment to withstand the inclement weather.

Materials

The materials you need for this craft, ideal if you like recycling, are:

Beds made with pallets.

In this project, you will have to put the sofa bed against a wall . However, if you prefer, you can use the backup technique of the previous option and attach it to the structure.

For example, there is the alternative of putting two pallets together as the base and fixing them to it. Another option is to cut a pallet in half and join it, so that the backrest is not so high. In addition, you will need cushions and pillows to decorate or make the backrest more comfortable.

Let your imagination fly and build the best sofa bed, without spending too much money and with what you have at home . Without a doubt, you will save considerably more than if you buy it in a store. In this way, you will have a beautiful space to enjoy at any time or receive as appropriate to your visits.

In addition, you will see that there are many options and that it can be a key part of the bedroom, since the bed base offers many storage options and amenities , such as the train bed, which allow us to have an amazing bedroom for our children, who can share room without losing space.

WHAT TYPES OF BED BASES ARE THERE?
Bed bases are many, of all types and styles you can imagine. Then we will present the different types of beds that are demanded in the market.

We will show you, on the one hand, the bed structures that best take advantage of the space and, on the other, other types of more general bedding:

BETTER USE OF SPACE
1. NIGHT BED AND BED CANGURO
The differences between trundle and kangaroo are not too many, but they do exist. Specifically, a trundle bed is formed by two beds, or even three, forming a single piece of furniture.

A kangaroo bed is made up of a bed frame that has another bed base underneath. The latter is easily extracted from below to form two beds. In general, the two terms are confused and that is why we have decided to talk to you about the two together.

In the market we can find two types of bed, but the truth is that the trundle bed with drawers is an evolution of the kangaroo bed .

In addition, the trundle bed can have more functionalities than that of housing two beds, since it can be found with three beds, more in the style of bunk beds, and can have drawers, desks and even closets.

If you are looking for a double bed with storage , this can be a very good solution, especially for small rooms.

2. TRAIN AND LITERA BED

The train beds are very similar to the bunk beds of a lifetime, but there is a difference between the two. In the case of bunk beds, one bed is on top of the other, vertically.

On the contrary, the train bed does not have a bed on top of the other just in the vertical, but it is on top but on one side. Look at the images and compare:

Today we find many ways to take advantage of space. In fact, you can find folding bunk beds, that is, they are taken out of the closet when you go to sleep, being able to enjoy much more of the room when the beds are collected.

But if you need a bed base with drawers , and even with wardrobes, the best option is a train bed, since the bed is to one side and not just above, you can use the space between them to Save all kinds of things, so it's a good choice of double bed with storage.

The train bed seems like a great opportunity for the children's rooms , especially if they have to share a room and the bedroom tends to be elongated.

3. FOLDING BED
The folding beds also allow us to take advantage of the space optimally, since they can be stored almost anywhere when we do not need them . In addition, this type of bed structure is usually very resistant and flexible. It is undoubtedly a good option that can get us out of trouble when we receive guests at home.

In the market there is a wide range of extra beds. Before buying one you will have to take into account the size you want, if you want it to be folded vertically or horizontally, the quality of the mattress and the supports.

4. FOLDING BED
Although there are very modern, this type of bed dates from the nineteenth century. They are an ideal solution to the lack of space and solve us in a moment any unexpected visit.

Nowadays, there are very modern and sophisticated ones. There are folding beds that are barely detectable, as they adapt perfectly to the decoration of the home.

In addition, some even have folding desk, wardrobe, drawers and even bookstore. We can also choose between the vertical or horizontal folding option.

What do you think about this option? We LOVE YOU

5. SOFA BASE GOLD BED (ABATIBLE SOFA)

The sofa bed is great to gain space in the room and, in addition, allows us to store many things under it , so it is another of the best options if we want a bed with storage.

If we need more cabinets, this type of bed is great for it. It has happened to all of us that we do not know where to store our clothes when we change seasons, or we need to store many towels or sheets ... If you feel identified, this is your solution.

Also, if you are looking for a base for a bed without legs (although there are also legs) these are ideal . Take a look at our article " Selection of the best cheaper canapés " to buy the right canapé without leaving you a fortune.

OTHER BEDS

1. SOMIER
The box spring is the classic of the classics. It consists of a support that is usually made of metal (although there are also wooden ones) that has transverse sheets of wood or other materials.

The firmness of the same will depend on the amount of sheets that are available and the width of these. Many of them allow to regulate the firmness, adapting to the needs of the consumer by means of the displacement of some tensors .

somier
They exist in a multitude of sizes. The larger ones for double beds usually have a bar in the center that allows more firmness.

This type of bed base would be very suitable for a latex mattress , since it allows good ventilation.

2. UPHOLSTERED BASE
This type of bed base, unlike the bed bases, offer a lot of firmness to the mattress and our rest , since its base is totally rigid. Upholstered bases can be of two types:

1. Rigid cover, which hardly allows perspiration, but which are ideal for spring mattresses.

2. Upholstered with breathable fabrics and even have a microperforated board, which considerably increases the ventilation of the mattress, providing the greatest firmness to foam mattresses, springs or viscoelastic mattresses . In Alsobre we do not recommend latex, since they are the ones that need more ventilation.

This type of upholstered base is designed with 3D fabric and transpiration valves (the 4 dots that you see in the center) that allow a better aeration of the mattress.

CHECK OUT THE CHEAPEST 3D FABRIC UPHOLSTERY BASES THAT WE RECOMMEND

3. ARTICULATED BASE
The articulated bases are a real pass. They allow you to be in bed reading, watching TV, looking at your mobile or tablet ... having at all times an ideal posture for your health and avoid hurting especially your back.

Although if you have insomnia problems, in our article Home Remedies to sleep well   We recommend that you do not do these things in bed, especially before going to sleep. If you want more information on the subject , take a look at the article.

Articulated beds have an advantage that we like very much in Alsobre , since we advocate for health and care.

And this type of bed allows us to lift the legs, so they are ideal for people with tired legs, poor circulation or back pain .

There is no doubt that they are ideal for people who have to spend a lot of time in bed and have reduced mobility, as it allows them to move.

Its main drawback is usually the price and space it occupies, although we can find some very cheap that are worth buying. And eye! You will have to buy a mattress for an articulated bed, it is not worth anyone .

THE INTELLIGENT MATTRESS THAT IMPROVES YOUR SLEEP HABITS THANKS TO YOUR TECHNOLOGY

AS IT DOES?

4. TATAMI BED
This type of bed comes directly from Japan and I do not know about you, but it really amazes us. The most normal thing is that they are made with natural products, wood, rice straw ...

Visually they seem beautiful, but you can also give more uses to your bed base, something that you had not raised.

This type of beds have a special mattress called futon, which must be very easy to store and transport, which allows us to increase its functionality a lot.

Within the tatamis we have the most original Japanese that are at ground level (as in the image above) and some that have adapted a little more to our customs, rising a few inches off the ground.

To sleep, the futon is pulled out and stretched on the tatami and ... voila! We have a Japanese bed in a few minutes.

During the day we can pick up the futon and use the tatami to do yoga or other sports, let the children play and we can even put the futon in such a way that it can serve as a sofa.

How about?
It can be considered a type of modern and original bed, without a doubt.

What tools and materials do you need to make a bed bunk?

  • Wooden boards
  • keyhole saw
  • Flexometer
  • Wood glue
  • Wood drill
  • Laundries
  • Metric screw
  • Self-locking hex nut
  • Key

How to make a bed bunk yourself?

Before starting it is important that you bear in mind that the furniture you are going to build takes up a lot of space, therefore you need a clear area to work more comfortable. In addition, we recommend you to build the independent modules and assemble them inside the room, since a mounted bunk is very difficult to manipulate and it will cost you to enter it in the bedroom.

1. Take measures. Measure the width and length of the beds. The height of the litter should be the high sum of each of the beds plus a stop that separates them of about 40 centimeters. To make a bunk you will build two independent beds exactly the same, which you will then attach to a structure at different heights. To make the beds, first create the bed frame. If you want guidance before starting on what jigsaw you need for your DIY jobs, learn how to choose jigsaw.

2. Mount the bed frame. Cut two planks approximately 15 centimeters wide, however long the mattress you are going to use. Half of these planks screw a long strip, which is where the slats that will form the bed frame of each of the beds rest . Cut these slats and distribute along the bedding leaving the same distance between them. Fix them to the strip on which they rest with wooden glue and lag screws. Repeat the process so that you would already have the two mattresses mounted, where you will put the mattresses.

3. Mount the mattress on the legs. Make two equal modules that make the legs of the beds. Cut two equal planks of 15 cm wide by the height of the bed, join them together by screwing planks of 15 centimeters by the width of the bed, one of these planks will go in the upper part of the module forming a structure in the shape of U inverted, the other will go in half. Remember to make a guide with a small bit in the wood before introducing the lag screws.

It is in this last plank, you will fix the bed base, also with wooden glue and lag screws. Do not forget, when taking measurements, take into account the thickness of the wood. Now you should have mounted two independent beds that are what will form your bunk afterwards.

4. Mount the structure of the bunk. Mount two equal structures that will be the legs of the litter. Cut two wooden planks of 15 centimeters in width by the height that is going to be the litter and join them with planks screwed to the edge of 15 centimeters by the width that has the litter. There will be 4 planks that you will use to join in each structure, one in the upper part, another in the lower part and two in the middle. This step is the same as the previous one, but this time, the legs are much higher since they are where you will mount the two beds.

5. Place on the legs the stop that separates the two beds. Now to separate the bed below and the one above, you must set a top to that structure that you have made before, do it on the inner side of about 15 centimeters wide by 40 centimeters long that supports the weight of the upper bed. This stop will be made of wood and you will fix it with thick screws and self-locking hexagonal nuts by tightening it with a key. It must be very fixed, since this stop supports the entire weight of the upper bed. If you are looking for guidance on the ideal nut for your projects, discover what hex nuts are .

6. Attach the beds to the structures. The structures previously assembled are the litter legs. The most comfortable way to place the beds in them is as follows; put one of the structures on the floor, mount the beds on top leaving the top between them, then put the second of the structures on top. Fix each bed to the legs with screw and nut. Carefully lift the bunk to make it straight and it will be mounted.

7. Put the ladder. With wooden planks creates a stair respecting the height of the bunk. You must fix it on one side to access the upper bed, these joints are made with wooden glue and lag screws.

It is a project that requires work and dedication, but the result is worth it, if you have dared to make your own bunk or any furniture in your home you can share it with us in our Projects section. If you have questions, you can open a thread of conversation in our forums where we will be happy to help.

How to make a pallet bed

  • The first thing you have to do is get some pallets that are in the best possible state, because that will save you work later. You need two pallets for a single bed of 0.90 x 1.90 m and the matrimonials measure 1.35 x 1.90 or 1.50 x 1.90 m. How many do you need to make the pallet bed will depend on the size of these. Generally, two are enough to make a small bed or four to make it bigger. Double the amount if you want your pallet bed to be higher, and that depends on your taste. A wooden board the size of the mattress to place it below it will be useful to preserve its shape and last longer.
  • Then you must remove the dirt from the pallet, if any, with water and a lot of pressure. Then wait for it to dry completely.
  • If the wood of the pallet does not have any treatment, it is recommended that you preventively apply a fungicide treatment (against mold) that you will find in the DIY warehouses. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and then let it dry. This process will allow your pallet bed to last a lot of time, especially if there is a lot of humidity in your area, otherwise you can skip this step.
  • Check it carefully and remove all nails that are protruding, bent or rusted, it is important that you do this to make the pallet bed secure. That is why you must eliminate any element that carries a risk of personal harm.
  • As the pallets generally come from industrial environments, they have an ordinary finish, so that for the bed to be well finished you should start by sanding the surface of the pallet with a medium or thick sandpaper, it is important that you do not get splinters and that it's smooth
  • Now remove with a brush or whatever you have on hand, the wood dust until it is clean. It is time to apply the primer, a liquid that will cover / seal the pores and improve the surface of the wood to paint it, it also improves the absorption of the paint. These substances are quick drying, so soon you can continue to make your bed of pallets.
  • Once the wood of the pallets is dry , you can start painting it preferably with wood glazes of the tone that you like. I recommend that you take into account the decoration of your room as a whole so that you achieve a harmonious whole.
  • When you have the pallets ready , start to make the structure of the pallet bed joining them together, for this I use special wood plates (joining brackets, perforated plates, fittings in L or T, etc.). There are many ways, I like straight lines because they are smaller and look less. You can place two plates per side to fix the structure, and they are placed in strategic places so they can not be seen: on the bottom, on the top where the headboard would go, etc. There are other methods to join wooden boards but after some experiences, I assure you that the plates are the most practical. They can also be joined with very long screws or with wooden blocks, but they are more complicated methods.
  • The size of the structure of the pallet bed depends on your taste, if you do not mind that it is a little wider than the mattress, it is likely that you do not have to cut the pallets, besides that you would have a free surface to put a lamp or books.
  • Now that you know how to make a pallet bed, you can be inspired to make your own bed or that of your children.
