How to choose the mattress and its accessories for the bed of your dreams?

Tips to choose your ideal bed and thus be able to have a dream of the highest quality.

Rest is essential when it comes to maintaining good health and getting the batteries charged. Whether we do sports or not, it is necessary to sleep a daily average of seven or eight hours, and therefore the bed is one of the most important places to maintain good health.

First of all, we must keep in mind that in bed we spend many hours of our life, and therefore it has to be a comfortable place. The mattress, the pillow and the base should make our body rest, therefore it is necessary that they adapt perfectly to it.

The offer of beds, pillows, sheets and mattresses is wide, and it is not always clear which one suits us the best.

Tips to keep in mind when choosing a mattress:

The mattress is the most important part of the bed, to maintain good back health. In addition, sleeping in a good mattress greatly increases the quality of life, but the offer is so varied that it is hard to decide. Mattresses can be of many types, of different materials (foam, springs, latex ...), with different degrees of firmness. In addition, the prices are very different. What is a good mattress for me? With these tips we want to answer your question.

Before looking for a mattress you should ask yourself:

How do you sleep?

If you sleep on your back, in a supine position, on your back, you must choose hard mattresses.

If you sleep on your side, a mattress of less firmness may allow you to allow the shoulder to sink slightly, until you find a comfortable position.

How much do you weigh?

If you weigh a lot, you will need firm mattresses that offer good support. On a soft mattress you would sink to excess.

Lighter people also need mattresses of greater flexibility, which adapt to their shape to distribute the weight better.

Do you move a lot?

If you move a lot while you sleep, a somewhat harder mattress will allow you to turn without effort. On a soft mattress you would sink too much, and it would be difficult for you to turn, which is uncomfortable.

Do you pass heat?

If you spend heat, sweat easily or live in a warm place, spring mattresses may suit you more, because they ventilate better and are fresher.

If you are cold or live in a cold place, foam, latex or viscoelastic models keep more heat.

Another questions

If you want an articulated base, you need a flexible mattress (foam, latex or pocket springs).

If you are allergic to dust or asthmatic, it is recommended to use a foam or latex mattress with a washable cover (unless, of course, you are allergic to latex)

What you should know about the firmness of the mattress

A good mattress should distribute the weight of the body in the proper way. It must be firm enough to hold the body well, but not so hard that it is uncomfortable. In recent years the idea that a hard mattress is always the best for the back has spread. Not so: in the end, the hardness, or better, the firmness of the mattress is a matter of personal preference, and weight.

A good mattress should respect the natural curvature of the spine, face up and aligned while you sleep on your side.

If the mattress is too hard or rigid, it does not fit the body. This, on the one hand, allows better aeration, but on the other hand, the weight of the body is not distributed properly throughout the surface of the mattress.

On a mattress that is too soft, the body tends to sink. This presents different problems: the sensation of heat increases, because the air does not circulate, and on the other hand the spine and the back are not well restrained, neither when sleeping on their backs, nor on their sides.

What you should know about the different types of mattress material

The material of the mattress is a determining aspect. We review the most common types of mattresses (springs, foam, viscoelastic and latex) and their characteristics.

Spring mattresses:

They can be of different classes, independent springs (Bionicos or Bonell), continuous or bagged:

-Biconic springs (Bonell):

they have a core formed by multiple metal springs placed vertically, which narrow in their central section and are linked to each other by metal wires. It is the traditional spring system and its main feature is a high firmness. It offers sufficient support and good ventilation, so they can be somewhat cool.

-Here continuous:

The framework is made from a single metallic thread. In both cases the core is covered by several layers of foam or cotton. It offers sufficient support and good ventilation, so they can be somewhat cool. There are mattresses with a summer face and a winter face, warmer. Its result is a very firm and resistant type of product.

-Cylindrical or bagged springs:

The springs, as its name suggests, are cylinder-shaped and wrapped in sacks of cloth, to avoid friction. They are independent structures, provide a precise support to the body and when there is no rubbing between springs, they are quieter than the previous types. They maintain a good independence of movements for the two members of the couple in a double bed. They often wear a very generous covering of different materials that makes them halfway between spring mattresses and foam or latex mattresses. Although they lose height and firmness with use, they can provide a good rest for fifteen years.

-Polyurethane foam mattresses

These mattresses look like a polyester or polyurethane "sponge cake" filled with thousands of tiny air cells or bubbles, and covered by a sheath. Depending on the number of cells per m3, their size and the cohesive agents carried by the mass, the mattress will be more or less firm. In general, the more light, the softer and the worse the aging. Densities below 35kg / m3 only suit beds for occasional guests or small children. In general, they are easy to handle and good heat insulators.

- Mattresses made of viscoelastic material

They are made of a special foam that molds to the body under the effects of heat and pressure, offering an optimal distribution of body weight. The deformation of the material lasts for a while when changing position, which can be uncomfortable. These viscoelastic mattresses interest, above all, those who must spend a lot of time in bed.

- Latex mattresses.

These mattresses are made of natural latex foam (from the rubber tree), synthetic latex (from petroleum) and auxiliary materials used in different proportions. There are mattresses that combine natural and synthetic latex. The core carries perforations to facilitate aeration, reduce weight and create areas of resistance. The latex mattresses offer a fairly firm support, but at the same time they are very flexible and adapt well to the contours of the body, distributing the pressure evenly. They are good heat insulators, and thanks to the vents they also maintain a pleasant environment in the contact area. These mattresses are a good option for those who move a lot at night, because latex effectively absorbs body movements. Also for couples if one moves a lot. For people with respiratory allergies or asthma, latex or foam mattresses are a good option to avoid the risk of mite colonies inside the springs. However, they are prohibited for those allergic to latex. They are quite heavy, which together with their great flexibility, makes them uncomfortable to handle. These mattresses can carry different coatings: cotton, wool, silk, synthetic, etc. Latex mattresses are usually quite expensive.

Other "special" mattresses

Orthopedic mattresses are suitable for those who must stay in bed for a long time. They are not suitable for a healthy person, it is uncomfortable to move in one of them. They are quite expensive, they are usually used by medical recommendation.

The water mattresses are heavy, they need a careful conservation and they are also very uncomfortable, especially for those who move a lot at night or for those who sleep on their stomachs. His most positive note is that the body adapts well to the mattress.

The futon , Japanese mattress made with layers of cotton, is suitable for those looking for a hard base. Its thickness is very small, and decreases with use. It must be changed frequently.

Classic wool mattresses have many disadvantages: they are very heavy, difficult to handle and maintain well and are unthinkable for those suffering from respiratory allergies.

Before buying the mattress ...

Take some time to try the mattress in the store before buying it:

It is not enough to sit down and feel it, lie down, try different positions ... look for the mattress that best suits your taste, your characteristics and your needs.

Lie on your back and pass a hand between the lower back and the mattress: if there is too much slack the mattress can be too rigid for your characteristics. If the hand does not pass, the mattress is too soft and the body sinks excessively.

If you sleep together in a double bed two people with very different weights and customs, you can choose two mattresses together, each adapted to the conditions of the user. However, a latex mattress or one of bagged springs will also maintain the independence of movements.

How long a mattress should last:

Many people confuse the warranty period of a mattress (often 10 or more years) with the time a mattress is meant to last. " After five to seven years of nighttime use, it may be time to evaluate whether your mattress still provides the support and comfort you need. If it shows flaccidity or visible bulges, or if you wake up feeling stiff, you may have to change the mattress. Our advice is not to wait more than 15 years of use to change them. After that time, the original firmness and hygiene conditions will have changed and not only will it not function properly, it could even be harmful to health.

Tips to keep it in good condition mattress:

You have to ventilate it every day. It is better to wait 5 to 10 minutes (and with the window open if possible) before making the bed.

Turn the mattress at least four times a year, from left to right and from head to toe.

Cleaning a mattress is difficult, so the best option is to protect it and always use a breathable 100% cotton cover. In addition, if you can, it is preferable that you use a cover model that leaves the bottom of the mattress outdoors, for proper aeration of all the rest equipment. Clean the surface of the mattress with a vacuum cleaner, if possible every two weeks, thus ensuring that at least part of the mites and accumulated particles come out.

Washable mattress covers are essential to keep the mattress in good condition. The bedroom is one of the places where there is more risk for those who suffer allergies to mites, as they often become strong in mattresses, sheets, quilts, pillows, feeding on our dead cells. For those allergic to mites, latex mattresses are the most suitable. And always take care to wash the bedding frequently to eliminate them.

What not to do?

It is not convenient to clean the mattress dry or soak the upholstery of the rest equipment. Nor is it advisable to use bicarbonate or other chemical elements that can damage the surface and even penetrate interior layers and deteriorate them. The old practice of hitting the mattress to release dust and accumulated dead cells is not recommended for modern equipment, which could be damaged. Never bend or fold a mattress (except on articulated mats), even for a short period of time, as it will irreversibly damage it. Do not support sharp objects or heavy, although the mattress seems an ideal surface to support furniture, could cause irreparable damage. The mattress is designed to rest, not to jump over it. Do not use the mattress on a base that does not cover at least 60% of its surface or is in poor condition. Never use boards between the mattress and the base of the bed, that can reduce the life of the mattress and even invalidate the terms of the warranty.

Tips to keep in mind to choose the base of the bed:

You should avoid the structures of metal beds. Modern trends lead us easily to models of beds in metal, for its design, or for its price. Unfortunately, this trend is the reverse of what we need to sleep better: the metal, good conductor at the electrical level, discharges us during the night, and tends to weaken us. It also attracts electromagnetic radiation from the environment, and causes us more tension during the night. The metal is also inadvisable at the feng shui level of the room.

Better a bed of solid wood for rest, wood does not discharge like metal, so we wake up with more energy, and more relaxed. In addition, the wooden beds are warmer, and encourage better energy in the room. Being made of solid wood, they do not carry chemical or synthetic products (glues, ...) that give off toxic fumes where you sleep. The agglomerated woods should be avoided if possible, but they are always better than metal beds.

For the bed base, it is very important to have a system with adjustable blades, to adapt the firmness of the "mattress + mattress" set and make sure that your back stays perfectly straight all night. Here we can make some concession to the plastic if the sheets carry joints.

So you have it clear: opt for a bed of solid wood, with sheets of adjustable firmness, and then look for the best mattress.

How should I orient the bed:

Traditionally, the north orientation is considered the most suitable for sleeping and in this case the popular knowledge is right. If we look at wild animals, most of them look in that direction when they want to rest.

The reasons are related to the magnetic orientation of the earth and the polarization of our cells. The earth is a huge magnet with two poles, north and south, that generate a magnetic field. From it are derived the lines of force that come out of the south pole (geographic) and enter the north pole, closing to the south by the interior of the earth, forming a loop. Our cells are composed of electrons, with their respective positive and negative charges. When we sleep aligned with the north, we facilitate rest because in that direction we do not interfere with the natural flow of the earth, which goes south-north. A good rest guarantees an adequate cellular regeneration, health and vitality.

When we talk about orienting the bed to the north, it means that the head of the bed is oriented in that direction, so that when we lie down, the crown of the bed is in the north and the feet in the south.

However, it is as important to sleep oriented to the north as to sleep "comfortable", that is, if we have to change the location of the bed and position it in a place that is uncomfortable because it messes up the natural structure of the room, this annoyance is probably not let us rest well. Therefore, there will be people for whom the main thing is to sleep towards the north and, on the other hand, other people will give more importance to the visual and practical effect of the arrangement of the furniture (not having their backs to the door or the window, leaving a space wide for opening the cabinets ...). Each one has to decide what is important for himself knowing the pros and cons of the two alternatives.

Tips to keep in mind when choosing a pillow:

Choosing the right pillow will help you align the head and neck, essential for a good night's sleep.

Firmness
First, choose the right firmness according to your preferred sleeping position. Those who sleep on their side need firm support, while a medium tone is ideal for those who sleep on their backs, and those who sleep on their stomachs require a softer pillow.

materials
Synthetic materials are better for allergic people. Do you prefer pens? Check the stuffing A higher quality filling means more comfort. Also choose tight-knit cotton covers.

Care
Synthetic pillows last one or two years; those of feathers can last from five to ten. Always use pillow cases to help extend the life of a pillow. Wash the sheets regularly, and the pillows will need less washing
The most important factor and the one that depends directly on us, is the position that we often have at the moment of sleep, since the thickness and hardness of the pillow depend on this.

How to choose firmness of a pillow according to a sleeping position:

People who sleep on their side, require a pillow thick and firm enough to cover the space between the shoulder and the head, so that it is not tilted to any side, the wider the shoulders, the thicker should also be the pillow.

Those who prefer to sleep on their backs are advised to use pillows of intermediate thicknesses and consistencies, in such a way that they adapt to the contour of the neck.

People who sleep on their stomach (which incidentally is a position that is not recommended by experts because the lumbar spine is forced), should choose a soft, low pillow; in this way the hair and the neck rotated remain at the same height of the rest of the body.

Tips to keep in mind to choose bed sheets:

Choose totally natural fabrics, such as 100 percent cotton. The sheets of natural fibers allow the body to breathe and, if you take care of them, they will last a long time, so they are worth the investment. The cotton sheets feel smooth and soft to the touch, while Egyptian cotton, which has a longer fiber, feels a little more luxurious.

The situation of the sheets is another point to keep in mind, because although it does not seem like it, it makes us feel a lot of trouble when we go to bed. Lying down with the bed made, with the sheets stretched and especially clean is one of the best ways to feel pleasure and tranquility at bedtime. These sensations will help us to fall asleep earlier and therefore feel more rested throughout the night.

How often would it be advisable to change mattresses?

Most people sleep in the same bed and on the same mattress from the first day of their marriage until the day their eldest daughter gets married. Mattresses , although we use them for about a third of our lives, seem to be in the ignored section of our homes . However, we must know that correctly evaluating our mattresses will save us money and problems.

The average life of a mattress or renewal period is seven to ten years. Mattresses that are made of a more durable material, such as high-end air mattresses or inner-spring mattresses with reinforced-wire coils, can reach a maximum of 10 years. However, there are mattresses that are not made with very durable materials. These are usually made with soft materials that have a shorter shelf life than the materials mentioned above. This type of mattress , such as low-end foam beds, can have a useful life of 5 to 7 years.

Is that term the same for all types of mattresses?
The amount we mentioned earlier is just an average of a traditional mattress . That said, the answer is a resounding no to this question, since everything will depend on the material in which the mattress is manufactured . If the mattress is made with high-end materials, as this may last a little over 10 years , but if they are made of low quality materials, then mattress wear may be faster than a period of 7 years .

When to change a spring mattress?
The spring mattress can be a very good option for people who suffer from heat at night thanks to its structure of open springs. They have the ability to distribute your weight evenly and thanks to this feature you can achieve a good night's sleep. However, the time to change spring mattresses is within 8 years , as many of its springs come to sink and cause a large number of body pains.

When to change a latex mattress?

A latex mattress requires a lot of care in order to have an average lifespan of 10 years or more. However, if these sensitive mattresses are not properly cared for, you should change latex mattresses at the moment you feel that you can no longer sleep or rest comfortably in your bed.

When to change a viscoelastic mattress?
The viscoelastic mattress has some totally innovative properties, but in the same way this does not mean that it will last a lifetime, since the duration of this type of mattress will depend on the quality it has. However, the recommended duration to then change viscoelastic mattress for safety to your health and well-being, is approximately within 8 years.

I must change if the mattress is sinking or has lumps
A sunken and lumpy mattress is one of the sure signs that your mattress should already be replaced. For people who are on the heavier side, flaccidity may be more noticeable. A portion of the mattress sinks because most of our pressure points are directed there. That is why it is important to obtain a mattress that distributes its weight evenly throughout the body.

Not only a sunken mattress or a bulky mattress is unsightly; A sunken or lumpy mattress can also be the reason why you wake up with back pains . A sunken mattress loses its firmness and gives it a feeling of softness. Because there is no firmness, the mattress tends to let your body sink into it and prevent it from moving freely. In addition, it will not adjust to the natural contours of your body, so now you will have a tendency to stoop.

I should change mattresses if I wake up with back pain, neck pain or if the sleep is not repairing
A large percentage of the Spanish population get up more tired than they were before sleeping, and this thanks to a mattress with a finished life that simply does not give for more. Therefore, if you want to have a restful sleep and be able to get up every day with pleasure with the desire to eat the world, we suggest you change the mattress for a new one.

In case of illness or weight loss it is advisable to change the mattress
If you really believe that you are going through an illness or weight loss due to the mattress, we can not give you precise indications as each case is narrowly specific. However, we recommend that you go to a specialist on the subject so that you can see and indicate exactly what type or model of mattress is right for you.

Whenever we change the mattress we must change the mattress

When it comes to replacing a mattress , it is also very important to change the mattress since the next mattress you are going to buy may not be of the same size as the base of the bed. However, we recommend that you report your case to a specialist for advice and can see if the change of the truth is necessary or not, clearly everything will depend on the disgust of the base.

When should I change my mattress?

When to change the mattress
There are many questions that arise about whether our rest team needs a change or can use one more season. Most people are not aware of what it means to sleep on a quality mattress and in good condition . These are some data that will surely interest you:

  • We spend an average of 14400 minutes per month on our rest equipment .
  • A mattress of more than 10 years, stops being completely healthy and becomes harmful, regardless of the use that has been given. This is explained by Asocama (Spanish Association of Bed) after several clinical studies.
  • Over the years, our body experiences metabolic or physical changes (loss or weight gain, growth, pregnancy, bone or muscle diseases, injuries ...), and the mattress that a few years ago fitted us perfectly, can not be the healthiest after these circumstances, because our characteristics and physical conditions have varied.
  • The importance of a healthy rest
  • A good rest is as important in our day to day as a healthy diet and a correct physical activity. When there is a sleep disorder or a bad rest, from the first day the rest of factors that condition our stability as people are also affected . For example, not sleeping well affects our physical performance (we feel more tired), and our fatigue conditions our intellectual performance (less concentration at work, less attention to important tasks of day to day, forgetting important issues, disorientation), and even our humor and our ability to assimilate the routine.

Over time, if a solution to this problem is not achieved, it can lead to serious problems that will require the help of a specialist to overcome them: insomnia, chronic fatigue, vertigo, muscle injuries ...

According to a study by Asocama, 18% of the population suffers from muscular pain, 6.8% suffer from allergy problems, 5.4% suffer from insomnia, and 20% suffer from other types of illnesses that could be related to rest. In addition, 18.5% feel tired and without energy when they wake up in the morning, and 13.5% get up with muscle aches. According to this, we can affirm that more than 30% of the population is not resting on the most adequate and healthy rest equipment . In addition, the older the rest equipment used by sleepers, the greater the percentage of people who do not sleep well, wake up exhausted or in pain.

The conclusion of all this can not be other: people are not aware that many of their health problems are related to their rest equipment. Because if they were aware, they would most likely invest in their health.

You need to renew your rest equipment if ...
After what was explained above, here are a series of situations in which you probably need to renew your mattress:

You get up tired usually . This condition can be due to various causes such as specific diseases, poor diet, depression or when we are taking strong medications that can cause fatigue. However, in most cases, when there is constant exhaustion, and especially if it is accompanied by muscular or lumbar ailments, our rest team may be responsible.
Your rest equipment is between 8 and 10 years old . The maximum life of a mattress is 10 years. However, not all mattresses achieve this durability, since it also depends on the use that is given, the quality of them, or the materials that form it and even the characteristics of the sleepers that use it. Make sure that the mattress you are going to use every day does not belong to an economic range, since in the medium term it will cost more. You can find more information in our Mattress Guide.

Your mattress is sunken or deformed . As we said, the life of a mattress also depends on the use that is given to it. If your mattress suffers a deformation in its guarantee period (usually during the first 2 years), it is probably due to a manufacturing problem, in which case you should contact the manufacturer of the mattress. If, on the other hand, the mattress loses firmness, sinks or becomes deformed in the following years, it is most likely due to the use that has been given, or because the physical characteristics of the sleepers with problems such as overweight, for example , do not adapt to the benefits that mattress offered (low quality, little firmness). In many cases, in addition, the deterioration of a mattress in the first 5 years of use is due to poor maintenance of the mattress (it has not been turned over or ventilated, or it has been used on bedspaces or incompatible or defective bases).

You have experienced physical changes . Throughout the years people and metabolism are changing, and we must adapt our rest equipment to our new physical conditions. This is: if you have become pregnant, if you have gained weight in recent years, if you have had an accident or illness that has affected your physical condition or even if you have gone through a stage of life (childhood, youth, adulthood or old age) and you feel that your physical conditions are not the same. Each person needs a certain type of mattress in each period of their life.

You have been a mother or father, or your son has grown up . Children of growing age need to change their rest equipment more often than when they reach adulthood. The needs of a 6-month-old baby are different from those of 4, 12 or 16 years old. Find out what mattress is the most recommended for your child. You can do it in this report on mattresses for children .

You have moved On many occasions people who start a new life in a new home, change their old mattress for a new one taking advantage of the move and the purchase of new furniture. In these circumstances it is very common for the furniture store to offer a gift mattress for the purchase of the furniture. If it is your case, you must ensure the quality of the mattress that you are going to give, because they are almost always mattresses with very basic characteristics and that have not been offered after evaluating your needs, preferences and physical conditions. It is quite risky to trust this type of mattress for daily use.

Your mattress is worn . As many people are not aware of the important role that our mattress plays in our health, many people do not know that the mattress or base on which they support their mattress can harm the condition of it. That is, if your mattress is defective and your mattress is new, there is a great chance that your mattress will end up damaged by the mattress, in which case the manufacturer's warranty would not be responsible for the incident. If you change your mattress, change your mattress.
You need a guest bed or a second home . If this is your case, you can get fantastic offers for those auxiliary beds that are only going to be used on certain occasions, since it is generally not worth making a significant investment in a mattress that is hardly going to be used. In our cheap mattresses you have several options.
If these are your circumstances, the only thing left for us to say is that you should not forget that, when choosing your rest equipment, it is advisable to consult a specialist in rest, because after asking you some questions about your tastes and conditions physical, may recommend the healthiest mattresses for you.

You do not need to be an expert in rest to know when you have to change the mattress of your bed. You do not have to go to a mattress store to ask if you should renew it (although if you come to Dormitorum, of course we will be happy to assist you!). You do not need to search the Internet on thousands of sites when you should renew your mattress. You do not have to be an expert in the field. Why?

Because there are some factors that tell you that it is your mattress that needs a definite rest since it has already done its job of giving you every night the restful sleep you need. Anyway, in Dormitorum we want to give you some tips so that you have them in mind.

Mattress age
The average life of a mattress is estimated at 10 years, of course this has its nuances as we will see in the next point. With the passage of time, the materials from which the mattress is manufactured are suffering progressive wear, which will end up damaging the quality of sleep night after night.

Therefore, it is best to change the mattress every 10 years or so. In any case, there are materials that are more durable than others, after what we have.

Use that has been given
Obviously, the use that is given to a mattress has a great weight in the wear of the material. The life of your mattress will depend on whether you use it daily or if it is a sporadic mattress.

As you can imagine, the wear of a mattress on which you sleep every day, night after night, for many years is much greater than the one you use only to sleep sporadically on weekends, which will last some more time. But beware, using it once in a while does not mean that your life will be twice as long, only that it will hold you a little longer.

Fabrication material
The type of material can also influence the durability of the mattress. Quality is always synonymous with profit and a mattress made of quality materials will last much longer than a mattress of inferior quality. But beware, that quality is no longer synonymous with expensive.

At present there are mattress stores that manufacture their own products using high quality materials and, in this way, they can sell them at cost price. By the way, do you know that Dormitorum is one of these manufacturers that sells quality at low cost?

Signs that indicate that you must renew it
We just taught you the theory, which is always good to know, right? But the practice is what really tells you if your mattress is the one that needs a permanent rest. So all you have to do is be alert for signs that your mattress is in poor condition. Let's move on to evaluate the following factors.

You get up tired
Numerous research and scientific studies have shown that resting is synonymous with health, we have been listening to the consequences of a bad sleeping life for years. And surely you are tired or tired of listening to it, because you have verified that it is true.

They're going to tell you that you do not know! That every day you're looking forward to bedtime to lie in your bed and sleep like a log. And at that moment two situations can occur.

One of them is that even if a bomb falls by your side you are not able to wake up, not even the noise of a fly with the desire to be gay can get you awake. But despite sleeping all night long, you wake up with a terrible fatigue, as if you had only slept two or three hours. And when you touch the alarm and you get up (you do not know how), you wonder how this can happen to you?

The other situation that occurs is the opposite, that you can not sleep. Despite being very tired or tired from having a day full of activities (work, home, children, a little sport, shopping, your social life, etc.), the time comes when you lie in bed , you relax, you're about to fall asleep and ... a lap, another lap and so on all night. And you think why? with what my body and mind need to rest and (without having any kind of concern) you can not recharge the batteries.

When do I have to change my mattress?

Like any other element of our home that we use daily, our rest equipment suffers progressive wear.

  • A good maintenance schedule will allow the mattress to have a longer useful life, but if we check it for signs of wear, the recommendation for hygiene and comfort is to replace it with a new one.
  • The general recommendation on the renewal term of our mattress is 8 to 10 years as long as we do not notice obvious signs of wear or malformation, in which case it should be changed as soon as possible to avoid possible health problems and improve our quality dream.
  • During the course of the years the components of the rest equipment are losing effectiveness, with what in the end the bad state affects our rest.
  • To prevent the period within which we must replace our mattress is shortened, we must ensure that wear is progressive and homogeneous, following a few basic maintenance guidelines as rotate positions every three months.

Should I change all the elements of the rest equipment?

In addition, to maintain mattress conditions it is important to have a good base. The specialists recommend changing the rest equipment if the base presents some type of damage, because a base in bad condition will reduce the effectiveness of the mattress.
The main reason for the change of a bed frame is the breakage of some of its parts or the change of comfort level of the rest set, for example, if you want to increase the total firmness, one of the options is to change the bed base by a rigid base.
Finally, we should not forget that the pillow is also part of the rest equipment and recommend changing it every two years.

From Pikolin we offer you some basic recommendations before changing mattresses:

  • Know what type of mattress we have used during these years and what technology has been used in its manufacture to have a starting point in the search for a new rest equipment.
  •  Go to a specialized store and let yourself be advised by the professionals.
  • Give all the indications to the specialist in rest on the needs at the time of sleeping, if you sleep alone or accompanied, if there is a lot of weight difference between both, your height, if it is for a first home or a second, if the person going to sleep is very hot, whopping, if it is allergic, what basis rest is currently going to change, etc ... all the information that can help us give a personalized recommendation to our needs.
  • Test in situ the mattresses that we believe can be adjusted to our needs. Lying in the same position we use when we sleep, and if we do it as a couple, try it both. There are many different materials in the market. The important thing is to feel good with the solution proposed by the specialist in rest, our back and sleep are at stake.
  • Learn about the mattress warranty and do not rely on products that are confusing or excessively long, since as we have seen, the average life of a mattress is 8 to 10 years.
  • Remember that you must have patience and advise with specialists in rest since the purchase of a mattress is a very important choice on which it will depend that you obtain a perfect rest in quality and quantity to get up with the energy that your body needs.

The mattress, when do you have to change it?

Although our rest equipment does not mention an expiration date as they exist in food, the passage of time also entails a wear of the materials and the possibility that over time your rest will be affected in a negative way.

Therefore, from Pikolin we want to answer several questions that you may have regarding your rest equipment.

HOW MUCH TIME IS IT ADVISED TO CHANGE THE MATTRESS?
The general recommendation on the renewal term is between 8 and 10 years. During this period of time, the components of the rest equipment are losing quality and effectiveness until reaching a point where their use can harm our rest. To reach this period, the ideal is to achieve progressive and homogeneous wear, therefore, basic maintenance steps must be followed. That is, a mattress that has not been rotated and rotated as recommended will lose its properties more quickly for a proper rest.

Olee Sleep 10 Inch Cool I-Gel Foam Top Innerspring Mattress 10SM01F

In addition, to maintain mattress conditions it is important to have a good base. The specialists recommend changing the rest equipment completely, because a damaged base can diminish effectiveness of the mattress.

Nor should we forget about the pillow whose renewal period is a maximum of 2 years.

IS THAT PERIOD EQUAL FOR ANY MATTRESS, WHAT IS THE MATERIAL?

Advances in the rest industry have made even the simplest mattresses have a satisfactory durability; that is, breakages or subsidence are prevented. But this is not enough. In addition to durability, it is important to maintain the capacity of the equipment to guarantee optimal conditions for rest. Continuous wire technology such as Normablock® or Normactive® from Pikolin, or new sophisticated materials such as Bultex®, place special emphasis on the rest equipment maintaining its properties throughout its useful life.

IF THERE ARE FLOODS OR THERE ARE ABOLITIES, DOES THE MOMENT OF CHANGE ACCELERATE?
With a good maintenance mattress wear is very progressive and it is not noticeable since we sleep every day in it, little by little we get used to it. The clear evidences are two, the time passed from the date of purchase and, the most important, not sleeping well, getting up with back pain and with the sensation of not having rested.

IF YOU RISE WITH BACK OR TIRED PAIN, IF YOU DO NOT SLEEP ENOUGH HOURS ... IS IT THE MOMENT OF CHANGE?

32% of the Spanish population uses these two expressions: "I get up tired, without energy" and "I wake up with muscular pains", the percentage of people who use these two phrases increases significantly when the mattress on which they sleep has more than 10 years.

NOW THAT I HAVE A DISEASE, I HAVE INCREASED OR DECREASED WEIGHT, IS IT ADVISABLE TO RENEW MY REST TEAM?
Since each case is very specific and it is difficult to give general recommendations in these cases.

From Pikolin we recommend to go to the specialist doctor so that he is the one who would advise him what type of mattress and / or pillow would be the ideal one for each specific situation (level of firmness and adaptability, etc ...).

ALWAYS YOU CHANGE THE MATTRESS, DO YOU NEED TO CHANGE THE SOMIER?

It is advisable.

It is best to inform the specialist about the mattress or base that you have at home so that he is the one who recommends the best option. All this after having inspected us at home if it shows obvious signs of wear, in which case it has to be changed.

If the time has come to change the mattress, find out in a very simple way which mattress is the one that fits your needs, with only 6 questions. Also, so you can try it, we tell you where you can find it for more ease.

Feeding

It is very important to substitute an inadequate diet for another one rich in fiber , fruits, vegetables and vegetables, as well as to consume between a liter and a half and two liters of water a day to avoid constipation . The fiber has the quality to absorb water and increase the volume of feces, whose consistency is softer and, therefore, facilitates its evacuation. It is convenient to reduce the consumption of salt , because it favors the retention of liquids and, therefore, causes venous congestion. The ingestion of alcohol, on the other hand, impairs blood circulation, hinders digestion and irritates the stomach and intestines.

You should also moderate the consumption of certain foods and irritants, such as: chili, spices, mustard, vinegar, garlic , onion , fat and coffee.

Exercise

Practice soft sports on a regular basis, such as walking or swimming, tone muscles, activate circulation and help improve intestinal transit, reducing the possibility of hemorrhoids. However, certain sports such as cycling, horse riding and motorcycling are not advisable. Neither are those that involve great efforts (to increase the pressure on the anorectal area), and those that involve excessive weight loads (such as weightlifting).

Position

Try not to stand or sit for long periods of time.

Defecate

Efforts should be avoided when defecating and using soft toilet paper, wet wipes or baths with warm water to clean the anus. Many people feel pain when evacuating when they have constipation and avoid or delay going to the bathroom, which produces more constipation and worsens the hemorrhoidal picture. Neither should the time to go to the bathroom be delayed when the need arises, nor should you spend a lot of time sitting on the toilet.

Overweight

Excess weight, especially if the fat is concentrated in the abdomen, compresses the hemorrhoidal veins.

Clothing

Do not wear tight clothing.

Effort

Making great efforts, such as lifting heavy objects frequently, can facilitate the appearance of hemorrhoids.

Treatment of hemorrhoids

These are some recurrent guidelines in the treatment of hemorrhoids to relieve their annoying symptoms:

  •     Take sitz baths with warm-cool water (3-4 a day) for 10-15 minutes.
  •     Apply cryocompresses or ice to the affected area to relieve symptoms such as pain, itching and inflammation.
  •     Antihemorrhoidal cream, which works as a local analgesic and improves symptoms immediately. With these ointments up to 80% of uncomplicated hemorrhoids can get better associated with the other measures described.
  •     Analgesics orally to eliminate pain.
  •     You can use natural natural remedies, making an infusion with plants, such as chamomiles , burdock , calendula and horse chestnut, which promote venous circulation, and take baths with this preparation.
  •     Use sanitary towels for hemorrhoids instead of toilet paper, which moisturize, relieve itching, and prevent possible infections in the area.

Treatment for bloody hemorrhoids

If it is bleeding internal hemorrhoids, or very annoying (itching and significant pain and continued, abundant mucous secretion), you can use certain methods to eliminate them, such as:

  •     Place some elastic bands at the base of the hemorrhoid , strangulating it until it falls off after a few days . At first, the patient may feel discomfort and have some slight blood loss.
  •     The coagulation , with laser or infrared light, that applies heat on the affected tissue in order to coagulate the veins on the hemorrhoid, which shrinks and disappears. Electrocoagulation also interrupts the blood supply to the hemorrhoid. This technique causes discomfort and bleeding for a few days.
  •     Cryotherapy Liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the hemorrhoid and destroy it. The disadvantage is that swelling of the anus usually occurs and healing is slow.
  •     Sclerosing injections . Substances are injected into hemorrhoids, which cause their healing, decreasing symptoms.

Surgery to treat hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoidectomy (surgical removal of hemorrhoids) is usually used for large, uncomfortable internal hemorrhoids that have not responded to other treatments. It is considered as the most effective method to treat internal hemorrhoids although, like all surgery, it carries risks and inconveniences. A risk derived from hemorrhoidal surgery is the formation of blood clots in the legs. These clots can occur days after the intervention and cause acute swelling and pain.

Another specific risk of the operation of hemorrhoids, although uncommon (<1%), is anal stenosis , which consists of a narrowing of the anus and impaired control of the intestines that makes evacuation difficult. In most cases, however, the patient is lifted shortly after surgery and discharged within 24 hours. During the first days it is usual that there is pain and a slight bleeding. If the bleeding is severe, you should go immediately to the doctor.

Another technique used to operate hemorrhoids is circular mucosal anopexy (CMA) , which uses a circular stapler to prevent blood flow and reduce anal mucosal prolapse. This technique was devised by the Italian surgeon Antonio Longo and reduces the postoperative pain so feared by patients, although studies are needed to demonstrate its long-term effectiveness.
