How to repair the float assembly in a toilet tank

The float valve assembly refills the toilet after it is overturned. The float valve consists of the filling valve and the flotation assembly. After the water is emptied from the reservoir, the float assembly lowers, which causes the filling valve to open. As the water level rises, it leads to the float valve with it, eventually closing the filling valve. If you have a broken float valve assembly, the best way to repair it is by replacing the whole assembly.

Instructions

1 Close the water supply for the toilet tank where you want to repair the float valve assembly. The water supply valve for toilets is mounted on the wall or on the floor behind the toilet. There will be a hose or tube that goes from the supply valve to the tank. Turn the knob on the end of the valve to the right to cut off the water.

2 Remove the lid of the toilet tank and set aside. Rinse the tank. Hold the handle down to keep the flap in the open position. This allows the inside water to empty into the tank.

3 Release the overflow hose from the top of the overflow tube in the reservoir.

4 Dry all the water inside the tank with the towel. Place another dry towel on the floor under the tank. Unscrew the coupling on the bottom of the tank with a pair of pliers. Dry all the water that is spilled with the towel.

5 Loosen the nut that surrounds the float wires in the bottom of the toilet tank with a wrench. Pull out the old float valve assembly from the toilet.

6 Turn the new float valve assembly upside down. Apply a thin layer of silicone grease to the cap on the bottom of the float valve. Insert the float valve into the tank so that the ends protrude through the bottom of the tank. Thread the nut on the bottom of the float valve with your free hand.

7 Connect the overflow tube to the top of the overflow tube. Wrap the lower threads of the float valve with plumber's tape. Reconnect the coupling and tighten with the key.

Tips and warnings

  •     It is necessary to replace the float valve assembly by repair, because many larger float valve assemblies do not have the anti-siphon technology incorporated in the filling valves, which is required in many municipalities.
