Projected polyurethane: an optimal insulating material

Polyurethane systems are one of the most used materials for the insulation of buildings due to their excellent properties . Its structure guarantees the air tightness of the buildings, the impermeability, the absence of joints as well as a low thermal conductivity, which gives the buildings a great thermal behavior and makes them more energy efficient.

Synthesia Technology is a manufacturer and distributor of   polyurethane systems   for building and industry. The main application of these systems is through projection. The result is known as   Projected polyurethane or projected polyurethane foam .

Origin of the projected polyurethane: how is it obtained?

The rigid polyurethane foam is obtained when two chemical products, a dissociant and a polyol, are mixed in the presence of suitable catalysts and activators.

In the application of rigid foam by projection for a function of thermal insulation in the construction sector, the mixing takes place in a small chamber located in the projecting gun.

Once the components are mixed, the heat released during the reaction is used to vaporize the blowing agent, which is the cause of the transformation of the mixture into foam with an approximate volume of 30 times the volume of the components in liquid state.

It is important to know how to correctly apply the projected polyurethane , taking into account a series of factors that range from atmospheric conditions   and the   machinery adjustments   up to the types and forms of the applications.

In this video you can see in detail how the rigid polyurethane foam is formed from these two components:

Properties of projected polyurethane foam

Thermal properties

The projected polyurethane has a high insulating capacity due to the low thermal conductivity of the foam gas in its closed cells, which can be placed at 10ºC = 0.022 W / m · K according to the UNE 92202 Standard, although this value rises slightly with the the passage of time until finally stabilizing.

After 9 months of aging, it is considered that the value is 10ºC = 0.028 W / m · K according to UNE 92120-1, which represents a 25% improvement with respect to the average of the other products used in thermal insulation (for example mineral wool or extruded and expanded polystyrene foams).

This material presents a great resistance against the effects of the passage of time and has a long useful life, remaining without deteriorating for more than 50 years.

The rigid polyurethane foam obtained by projection is the most efficient insulating material, since it requires a minimum thickness to insulate the same as other insulating materials . This good thermal behavior in relation to the thickness supposes an economic benefit, since no useful surface in a building is wasted.

The combination of thermal and economic benefit has been one of the main drivers of market development of projected polyurethane, which is in full expansion, as we observed on the IPUR website .

Properties facing water

The Technical Building Code seeks to limit the risk of the inadequate presence of water inside buildings and in their enclosures. As stated by the CTE, intermediate continuous coatings are one of the best alternatives to meet these impermeability requirements.

The projected polyurethane complies with the requirements established in DB-HS1 for insulation materials related to sealing, cracking resistance, adhesion, permeability and physical and chemical stability .

With a continuous coating like the projected polyurethane of closed cell, it is not necessary to render plaster as the material itself meets the requirements of impermeability. This supposes an economic benefit and of space, since the necessary thickness is smaller.

With regard to humidity, in most cases the projected polyurethane guarantees the absence of interstitial condensation, due to the relative values of humidity and its density. This characteristic allows the transpiration of the enclosure, which avoids pathologies related to the internal health and, at the same time, guarantees the durability of the building.

Properties in front of the air

An optimal insulation system must combine the thermal properties with the good behavior against air. That is to say, it must guarantee the watertightness of the building .

Air tightness is one of the concepts around which passive houses revolve, allowing savings of up to 80% compared to a traditional building.

The projected polyurethane is a continuous insulation : this continuity forms the barrier against air that allows the envelope of the building to have an adequate seal.

Properties in front of the fire

Polyurethane systems with high fire resistance are totally safe insulation in buildings, both structurally speaking and for the safety of their occupants. You have to knock down the   false myths that exist around this type of isolation through the various tests that have been carried out.

ANPE conducted a comparative study of the reaction to fire of constructive solutions of polyurethane and mineral wool in final condition of use . In the article you can download the videos of the comparative tests to know firsthand the results.

Projected polyurethane systems with insulating function

As we have pointed out above, Synthesia Technology is a manufacturer and distributor of polyurethane systems for building and industry.

In the case of projected polyurethane, our polyurethane systems applied to the building focus on three functions: thermal insulation, acoustic insulation and anti-radon barriers .
Polyurethane sprayed as thermal insulation

We can say that the projected polyurethane is fashionable and this is largely due to its functions as a thermal insulator. Some examples of applications of our projected polyurethane systems with thermal insulation functions:

  •     Isolation of floors .
  •     Waterproof ventilated facades .
  •     Rehabilitation of covers .

Polyurethane sprayed as acoustic insulation

We have a range of projected polyurethane systems that, in addition to the function of thermal insulation, have excellent acoustic characteristics. You can read more about it at:

  •     Insulation for floors between floors .
  •     Acoustic insulation for floors .

Polyurethane sprayed as an anti-radon barrier

Our newest polyurethane system combines the function of thermal insulation with that of anti-radon barrier. The new ECO superheated polyurethane projection is presented as an efficient solution against the danger of radon gas in buildings.

This anti-radon barrier is optimal both in new construction and in buildings already built.

The abovementioned are just some examples of our polyurethane systems designed for building . We have a wide variety and a specific line of polyurethane for industrial applications.
