Making your own queen-size wooden bed frame is a great way to upgrade your room without spending a lot of money. Bed frames sold in furniture stores can be very expensive. With only a few pieces of wood and some common household tools, however, you can make a simple wooden frame from the bed in the country. 1 Measure the mattress that will be stored on the bed frame. Queen size mattresses are usually around 6 1/2 feet in length and 5 feet in width. Take one or two inches off each edge so that the frame of the bed will be slightly smaller than the mattress. This keeps the structure of the bed out of the way so that it does not hit the legs against it when entering and leaving the bed.
2 Use an electric saw to cut lumber into two long side pieces and two shorter end pieces according to your measurements from step 1. The size of the wood you choose will depend on how high you want than the frame of the bed that is.
3 Place the pieces of wood on the floor so that they form a box. Use wood glue to join the pieces in each corner. Hold the ends together to hold them in place while the glue dries. Allow the box to dry overnight, then remove the clamps. Reinforce the frame by driving three large wood screws through each corner.
4 Cut three pieces of wood the same length as your end pieces to serve as supporting beams that prevent the mattress from sinking. Evenly spacing these support pieces within the arch; Use wood screws to attach them to the two side pieces.
5 Cut a plywood panel large enough to completely cover the structure of the bed. If you are using the unfinished plywood, use an electric sander to sand the top down before installing it on the frame. This will prevent chips from entering your mattress springs or a mattress when placed on top of the bed frame.
6 Apply a wood stain or paint. If you prefer an unfinished look, apply a layer of clear polyurethane sealant. This will protect the wood from moisture and help your bed frame last longer.
