How to wash your hair with baking soda - Nutrition Therapy

Do you know you can wash your hair without using shampoo? Yes, with bicarbonate, although there are other methods. And no, do not be afraid to go around with pestilent hair, you will be as clean as with the shampoo, and in the long run you will be much healthier. Do not be fooled, do not run risk of anything, nor your hair either, just the opposite. Maybe it's the shampoo companies that are at risk and that's why they spread these things. Of course, everything depends on how it is done.

They say it can cause infections, irritations and hair deterioration. Sure, like shampoo, if you use it improperly, for example using a large amount, or too often. They also say that the hair produces fat and that if it is not removed it can be bad. I agree with that, and as soon as you try the bicarbonate, you will see that the excess fat is removed as well as with the shampoo, but, unlike this one, it does not take away all the natural oils that the scalp produces. As the scalp tries to remain in balance, removing the oils tends to produce more, and therefore with this method so many washings are not necessary.

The bicarbonate does exactly the same function as the shampoo, as it has a detergent effect that cleans the hair removing grease and dirt, but in a less aggressive way. The trick is to dilute it correctly for your needs and then use an acid pH solution to restore the pH of the scalp, as the bicarbonate is alkaline.

When you try it you will see that you do not miss the "clean hair" feeling that the shampoo leaves you, because, even though it does not foam, you can notice that the hair is clean. So clean it squeaked. Contrary to what we have been led to believe, the shampoo foam is the product of chemical agents and is not a measure of its cleaning power.

And why use baking soda and no shampoo?

Because the shampoo is loaded with toxic ingredients, like the vast majority of cosmetic products. And not as remains or traces, but as main ingredients. The skin is the largest organ in the body, and what we put in it is absorbed directly into the bloodstream. In this cosmetics database you can put the ingredients of your shampoo right now and check its risks. Risks such as organ toxicity, disruption of the endocrine system, damage to the immune system, irritations and allergies. That which is known. It is curious to say that washing your hair with baking soda is "a dangerous fashion".

Shampoo is not necessary, contrary to what we have been led to believe. In fact, until the 30s, women did not use shampoo. And in addition to the toxic, you can ruin your hair because it takes all the natural oils you need to be hydrated, healthy, and without frizz. That's why you have to use conditioner, which covers your hair with silicones (basically plastic) to keep it soft. And those silicones can only be cleaned with the aggressive surfactants that shampoo carries, and so you're in a vicious circle that does not do any good to you, your hair, or the environment.

Sodium bicarbonate, on the other hand, is a natural compound that is neither toxic nor harmful, and can even be ingested, provided it is not in very large quantities. It is one of the safest and most versatile products that exist. It is used among other things in baking, in natural hygiene products, cleaning, and has even been used traditionally to prevent and treat the flu.

Therefore, if you want to improve your hair, your health and live more naturally, this can be a very simple step. It is also very economical and saves time, since it considerably increases the interval between washes. And also the time you spend in front of the hair products shelf choosing shampoo and conditioner, deciding between Perfect Curls or Intense Smooth, because surely you do not have one thing or another! (You will not have it with those products). And more time and money because your hair may improve to the point of having to use fewer styling products, if you use them (or none).

How to wash your hair with baking

What you need:
  • - Two little bottles with a spout, like those in the first photo, made of plastic. They sell them in the Chinese, they are the mustard and ketchup type.
  • - Sodium bicarbonate, or sodium bicarbonate, which is the same. They sell it in the supermarket in bags of 1 kg.
  • - Apple cider vinegar or lemon juice, if you dislike vinegar, but keep in mind that when the hair dries it stops smelling completely of vinegar. If you want to make it with lemon juice and you do not feel like squeezing it, they sell pure squeezed lemon juice in small bottles in some supermarkets.

The initial mixtures:
These are the initial mixes, which you will have to adjust later, depending on your results:

  • - For the "shampoo": 1 tablespoon of baking soda in 250 ml (one cup) of water. If your water is very hard, use distilled water. Wait until the bicarbonate dissolves completely, to undo the "crystals". The solution has to have a somewhat "slipping" feel, different from that of water. If you do not have it, add more baking soda.
  • - For the "conditioner": pour 1 to 6 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice and fill to 250 ml (one cup) with water. And optionally, add a few drops of essential oil / s, for its smell or for its hair properties.

Process:
1. Detangle your hair well and brush it a little to remove dirt.

2. Wet all the hair well, apply the "shampoo" you need with the whiplash on the scalp, massaging the roots a little by areas (insisting more on those that are more greasy). No foam comes out, but it's not unpleasant. Massage the whole head a little, as with a normal shampoo, adding more water if you need it, but always worrying only about cleaning the roots, not the entire length of the hair (it will be cleaned with what falls). You can have a mixture, and you can use it in the next wash.

3. Rinse it well, to avoid whitish remains on the hair.

4. Put all the "conditioner" on the roots and soaking all the hair, and let it act a few minutes (while you soaping your body).

5. Rinse well, finishing with cold water.

If you have used vinegar, in the wet, the hair will smell a lot, but the smell disappears completely when it dries.

For some people there is a period of transition in which the hair is somewhat dirty, they might not be making the bicarbonate mixture potent enough, since the scalp can take from 1 to 4 weeks usually to normalize the production of fat. For me there was no transition period, but they say that before using a purifying shampoo to remove the remains of silicones from the shampoos and conditioners that you have used, it facilitates the transition. This purifying shampoo can be any that does not carry any silicones, notice that it does not carry any finished ingredient in -xane, -zane, -cone, or -conol. And do not use conditioner afterwards.

If at first it does not work, do not abandon the first change, it's about finding what your hair is doing well, adjusting the mixtures according to the results, and trying to accustom the scalp to more spaced washings, if necessary. he does not do it alone

To adjust the method:
If in the long run your hair is left to greasy, try:

  • - increase the time you have the bicarbonate in your hair, or increase the amount of bicarbonate, although this last is not recommended, it is better to wait to see if it is regulated only
  • - reduce the time you have the vinegar / lemon in your hair, or reduce the amount of it
  • - apply a natural dry shampoo between washings

If in the long run your hair is left dry, try:

  • - reduce the time you have the bicarbonate in your hair, or reduce the amount of bicarbonate
  • - increase the time you have the vinegar / lemon in your hair, or increase the amount of it
  • - replace the "shampoo" of baking soda with one or two egg yolks, in some washings or in all, in the same way as the baking soda, letting them act for a few minutes
  • - Apply a pinch of oil after washing, like a serum, spreading it first on the palms of your hands. I like this one, coconut, but you can try other
  • - Frequently use a boar bristle brush, like this one, which is the one that best distributes the natural oils of the hair, the best anti-frizz moisturizer.

I was getting a bit dry and what made the difference was to put a little less baking (1 teaspoon scarce in 250 ml) but above all put a lot more vinegar, like a quarter or more of the total mix.

Try it and if you do not do well at the beginning, experiment and insist, it's worth it!
