Dishwasher at home: myths and reality

I spent most of my life without a dishwasher, but in 2015 we still decided to purchase it, and now, after 2 years of active use, I want to share my experience with you. I counted the cost of washing dishes in the car and manually, as well as the cost of one cycle when using different tools, and also dismantled some popular misconceptions. All the details further, I hope this information will be useful to you.
Firstly, is it worth buying a dishwasher at all?

So, as I wrote earlier, I lived for a long time without a dishwasher, and the main argument against buying it was the belief that the car would be idle most of the time. But the years went by, I had a child, then a second, and then a third. ... Then I realized how much the routine daily washing of dishes is depressing! Of course, my example is not the most indicative, because not all of my readers have such a big family. The second point that stopped me was environmental (more water consumption than manual washing). However, over the years, the energy efficiency of dishwashers has increased significantly. Now when washing dishes manually consumes more water than when washing in the car. I compared the water consumption a month before and after the purchase of the dishwasher. As a result, over the past couple of years, our average monthly consumption is 0.5-1 cubic meters less.
Who needs to buy a dishwasher?

I think that for home use there is a need for a dishwasher for large families and large families, in which all relatives - grandmothers / grandfathers, aunts / uncles, moms / dads, children, grandchildren eat at the common table. In small families, dishwashers do often stand idle, as it is easier to wash the dishes by hand immediately, than to accumulate the required amount. A good option for such families is small dishwashers.

Which dishwasher to choose?

I will not give advice on choosing a brand, since there are a lot of offers on the market, it all depends on your personal preferences, desires and financial possibilities. When I chose my dishwasher, I mostly relied on reviews on the Internet. As a result, he stopped at an inexpensive but sufficiently well-known brand. In general, I am satisfied with my choice. A much more important parameter in choosing a dishwasher, in my opinion, is its size, so I want to elaborate on this point in more detail.
How to choose the optimal size of the dishwasher?

We use a dishwasher designed for 10 sets of dishes. This is an average size. Usually we run it once a day, and there go both pots and pans. There are 6 people in my family: two adults and four children. If we had the opportunity to install a machine that is larger in size and size, we would choose 12 or 14 sets to fit all the dishes that had accumulated in a day. Based on my experience, I want to give advice: choose a dishwasher by the number of sets of dishes. How to calculate how much you need? Multiply the number of family members by 2. A family of 3 people, for example, will have enough cars for 6 sets, and a family of 7 people will need a bigger car - at least 14-16.

Dishwasher: how everything works

Dirty dishes laid in the tank of the car. Add detergent - pill or powder. Once a month or less, regenerating salt and rinse aid are added.
The tank is filled with water, which is softened by passing through a special container. The unit heats the water itself. For this purpose, electric heaters are provided in its design.
Detergent is fed into the heated water from a special tank.
Through the circulation pump, water is sprayed under pressure through special nozzles from below and above the tank. A rotating jet of water cleans the dirt from the dishes. All waste is deposited on the bottom of the chamber chamber. Water temperature varies from 30 to 90 degrees.
Water is drained from the tank through the filter, after which it goes back to the sprinklers. The water cycle occurs until the completion of the program, from 1 to 3 times.
The drainage pump pumps water into the sewer.
Clean water enters the machine and rinsing dishes.
After draining the water from the machine, the dishes are dried.

Dishwasher myths
Myth number 1: The machine is washing the dishes badly

Reality:

Yes, this happens, but it is either due to the fact that it is incorrectly set up, or because the regenerating salt or rinse aid has not been added. Also, the causes of poor-quality washing can be too hard water or filter pollution.
Myth number 2: the car washes for a long time

Reality:

In fact, the machine can work for at least half an hour, at least two hours. But she does it without our participation! All that is required of us is to load the dishes into the machine, pour in the powder and press a button. It takes only 3-5 minutes, and even hands do not need to wet! In addition, all dishwashers have so-called “short programs” (“express wash”, “quick wash”), as a rule, their duration does not exceed 30 minutes. However, such programs are only suitable for washing non-heavily soiled dishes, for example, for rinsing glasses, dessert plates and tea cups.
Myth number 3 Dishwasher - this is overkill.

Reality:

Now, in the 21st century, we live surrounded by a variety of electronic assistants. I have no servants in my family, we live separately from relatives, so there is no one to help my wife with household chores. So a dishwasher is her “electronic servant”, along with a vacuum cleaner and a washing machine.

As for the cost of a dishwasher compared to washing by hand, consider a simple example - a plate with the calculation of the cost of washing dishes:

From the above calculations it follows that washing in the dishwasher is more expensive. But we can not say that the difference in 4.8 p. - This is an overly expensive solution. The calculations I take from the experience of my family, in which 6 people, while we all mostly eat at home. We run our dishwasher once a day, we have enough. It seems that the usual liquid dishwashing detergent is consumed more slowly than powder or tablets, but this is an illusion, because we wash the same amount of dishes both in and out of the car, just in the tank of the machine the dishes accumulate longer than in the sink.

What means for the dishwasher to choose?

I strongly recommend the use of regenerating salt, as without it the quality of washing is significantly reduced. There are 2 options in my store: Sonett (Germany) and Bioretto (Russia) regenerating salt . Also, if there is bloom on the glasses and dishes, I recommend using Sonett rinser based on castor oil. In addition, for this purpose you can use bleach (sodium percarbonate) , which is also presented in 2 brands: Sonett and Pure Water .
Powder or tablets?

I myself use pills, it is more convenient for us. But from a rational point of view there is no particular difference. Tablets are inconvenient only in the case when the powder needs to be mixed with bleach. Therefore, the tool must be chosen for reasons of ease of use, as well as on the basis of their financial capabilities, since tablets are usually more expensive than powder. In my store you can find both powder and tablets of different brands ( Sonett , Bioretto, Fresh bubble ).

My recommendations for using a dishwasher:

From time to time, be sure to clean the mechanical filter at the bottom of the tank; it is cheaper than repairing the machine completely in a year.
If the water in your plumbing is hard, it is better to use a washing booster (for water softening) and bleach (for better washing) with Sonett powder in proportions 1: 1: 2.
Heavily soiled pots and pans are poorly washed in the dishwasher, so it is better not to load them with the rest of the dishes, otherwise it will wash worse. It is better to wash the strong contamination manually, so as not to have to wash everything.
It is not necessary to block the sprayers of water below and above, the washing efficiency will decrease.
From time to time, start the dishwasher in maintenance mode with the addition of a scale and lime remover (for example, Sonett decalcifier ).
