2. Reduces depression

Numerous studies have been conducted proving the reduction of depression in animals as a result of taking curcumin. ( 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 )

These results appear to be related to how it affects the function of the neurotransmitter through the neurotrophic factor of the brain ( BDNF ). ( 11 )

In 2014, Phytotherapy Research published the amazing results of a study in which 60 volunteers diagnosed with depressive disorder took part. ( 12 ) Volunteers were divided into three groups: a group with curcumin, a group with fluoxetine, a combined group. Six weeks later, curcumin was found to be as effective as fluoxetine. The combination of curcumin with fluoxetine led to a slightly greater improvement, but the magnitude was statically insignificant.

After that, at least two other studies also observed the effects of curcumin on depressed patients. In the first, 56 people (men and women) participated, and in the second, 108 men. ( 13 , 14 ) Both used placebo, but did not compare curcumin with any antidepressant. Both studies have shown that curcumin effectively reduces the symptoms of depression, unlike placebo.

Several tests have been conducted to study the relationship between curcumin and Alzheimer's disease. 4. Improves skin health

Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of curcumin have proven to be effective in treating skin diseases. A review of available RCTs confirmed that eight eligible studies proved the effectiveness of turmeric extract (about 1000 mg of curcumin per day) in the treatment of arthritis. ( 26 )
6. Can treat and prevent certain types of cancer.

According to world authorities such as Cancer Research UK : ( 27 )

In 2009, Biochemistry and Biophysical Research Communications published a laboratory study from Auburn University that explored the potential of curcuminoids for reducing glucose levels . ( 30 ) Research has shown that curcumin is 400 times more effective than metformin in the activation of the enzyme AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase). One compound obtained by fermenting curcumin, tetrahydrocurcumin , activates AMPK 100,000 times stronger than metformin in certain cells.

Researchers believe that AMRK activation is a “therapeutic target” for type 2 diabetes. ( 31 ) And this means that figuring out how to activate this enzyme has great potential for developing more effective treatments for diabetes and insulin resistance.

Other mechanisms by which turmeric can effectively reduce or reverse diabetes symptoms are related to its anti-inflammatory effect. 8. Fights obesity

A study published in the journal Biofactors found that curcumin can help reduce the growth of fat cells. Researchers have found that the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric effectively suppress the inflammatory processes of obesity and help reduce it. ( 35 )
9. Helps to treat inflammatory bowel disease

A study was conducted in which people with ulcerative colitis took part. ( 36 ) Patients were divided into two groups. The first took curcumin along with mesalazine (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory), and the second took placebo plus mesalazine. Patients from the placebo + mesalazine group were more than 4 times more likely to have relapses and exacerbations of ulcerative colitis during the six months of the study . This suggests that the benefits of turmeric may include helping to maintain remission of the disease.

One small pilot study examined the benefits of turmeric for patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease . ( 37 ) Although the sample size was small, all patients with ulcerative colitis and 4 of 5 patients with Crohn's disease showed an improvement within two months , which indicates the need for additional research.

Usually, patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are prescribed corticosteroids , which reduce pain, but over time damage the intestinal mucosa, which causes a worsening of the condition. That is why these drugs can not be taken for a long time.

However, the addition of curcumin had no side effects in any of the above studies.
10. Can regulate cholesterol

Turmeric and ancient medicine
