Can you take the power off of a lawn mower?
The self-propelling mechanism in many lawn mowers operates through a pulley system and a drive belt connecting the front wheels for engine rotation. When the handle is tightened, the belt spring engages and pushes the belt against the pulleys. The drive system can be dismantled to disengage the self-propelling mechanism of many lawn mowers.
Safety precautions
Before performing work on a lawn mower, especially drive systems and blade, remove the rubber cover from the spark plug end. Ground the rubber sheath against a metal tip on the engine cylinder to ensure there are no accidental starts. Move the mower into a flat, well-lit workspace so you can comfortably access the tape and drive systems on the mower. Always wear leather work gloves, closed shoes and long trousers when working on a lawn mower.
Access to the belt
Unhook the spring clip into the drive system, moving the lever to the "off" position. This will release tension on the belt, allowing it to be removed. Hands under the engine block. In many self-propelled lawn mowers, the belts can be easily accessed. However, in some a protective cover is located at the top. It should be removed to access the strap. On many models, the drive pulley is directly below the crankshaft of the lawnmower motor so that it can be connected to the engine.
Removing the Belt
The force belt to the pulleys to spin. These turn the front pulley and the front wheel axle. To disconnect the drive system, the belt must be removed from the pulley system. After gaining access to the tape, slowly turn the rear pulley while pulling down on the belt. Rear pulley belt roll. After releasing the belt from the rear drive pulley, slowly roll the front pulley strap and remove it.
Replace the Belt
If you ever want to switch back to a self-propelled lawnmower, replace the tape for the drive system. Remember how the tape was defeated before taking it outside. If it helps, draw a routing diagram of the belt around the pulleys and guides to help with your new assembly. Make sure the tape is fully in the center of the two pulleys and runs through all the strap guides before starting the lawnmower.
