How do I change a strap on a self-propelled Craftsman lawn mower?
Most brands of lawn mowers are more similar than different. The process for changing the strap on a Craftsman lawn mower is no different than the process for any other important brand. A series of simple steps facilitates this process.
Belt Change
The first and most important step is to disconnect the wire from the spark plug. Remove the cover of the traction strap and underneath it is a pulley. Tilt this pulley towards the motor by loosening enough tape to remove it. The wheels of a self-propelled lawn mower are driven by the movement of the blade, so the other end of the tape will be connected to the blade. You can tilt the motor to remove the other end of the blade pulley strap.
To install the new belt, reverse this process, placing the belt on the blade pulley first and then the wheel pulley. Tighten pulley wheel adjustment. The belt should move about a quarter of an inch when pushed between the two pulleys.
Finally, re-connect the spark plug.
