How to clean the chlorinated grout

Grout can be a problematic area in the bathroom, kitchen, front door or any other area where you have laid tiles. These fine seams collect dirt, dust and dirt easily and can become stained and colorless over time. Bleaching is an effective way to clean grout, but care should be taken to use proper bleaching and cleaning methods to prevent further deterioration or discoloration of tiles and worsening the problem. Cleaning your grout with lye is a relatively simple weekend project and you can keep your appearance new grout when it is performed on a regular basis.

Instructions

1 sweep and clean the area if you are working with the grout on the floor. This will remove crumbs and debris from the area so you can reach the stained grout.

2 Mix the powdered oxygen bleach with water as indicated on the product container to make an oxygen-bleach solution. This liquid is preferable to the actual lye, since it has a lower number of fumes and will not damage the color of the tile surrounding as the standard lye.

3 Apply the solution of oxygen bleach for grout stained with a sponge. Leave the liquid soaking in the grout for at least half an hour.

4 Scrub in the stained grout with a bristle brush to further remove remaining stains from grout.

5 Scrub the floor with clean water to remove any remaining oxygen bleach. Allow the area to air dry.

Tips and warnings

  •     Make sure your grout is properly sealed to prevent dirt, mildew, and fungus from being absorbed into the porous surface. Unsealed grout should be cleaned with steam removal to completely remove dirt.
