How to clean tile and stone grout with a machine

No matter where grout and working stone tiles are installed in your home, you are forced to accumulate dirt. Instructions

1 Run a soft bristle cleaning brush over the tile and stone grout to remove loose dust. Alternatively, place the brush in a vacuum and wipe the surface with the vacuum to remove dust.

2 Place the nozzle brush attachment into the steam cleaning hose. In most steam cleaners, change the attachment by pulling the hose joint to remove it and then pushing in the new attachment until you can not push the accessory farther, as it does in a standard vacuum cleaner.

3 loosen the tank cap on the steam cleaner and pour water into the tank. Use a beaker to prevent spillage.

4 Turn the steam cleaner to a middle position on the dial. Run nozzle brush attachment over grout and tile, starting at top edge of tile and slowly sliding nozzle through wall.

5 leave every 6 to 8 inches and point outward from the steam cleaner wall. Clean the wall with a clean towel to remove dirt that the steam cleaner loosens from the tile and stone grout surface. Continue running the steam throughout the tile area, and repeat the process if the tiles are still dirty.

Tips and warnings

  •     The consumption models of steam cleaners often have price tags around $100 or less. However, if you have no other use of a steam cleaner, you may want to rent one. Many home improvement stores and rental companies offer steam cleaners for rent per hour or per day.
  •     Steam from a steam cleaner that can be easily burned. Avoid contact with steam during grout cleaning and tile. If running out of water in the steam filter before tile cleaning is complete, do not immediately open the tank cap to add more water. Turn the steam cleaner and allow it to cool for at least one hour before opening the lid to prevent burns.
